Essentially they needed United's Midfield combo Young, Cleverly, Wilshere, Carrick

With the current team the problem was the defensive minded approach where Gerrard, Parker, was told to stay back and provide 0 support... When the ball was hoofed up field, Welbeck gets the ball to Rooney (by luck) seeing as Rooney was playing in a 4-4-2 formation Rooney would have no one to pass back to as Gerrard/Parker was protecting the back 4...

The formation felt more like a 4-5-1 formation but urging Rooney to play in the 4-4-2 formation...

the talk in the news is they need to change formation

and i wont mind seeing them in a 4-2-3-1 formation

These lads tell us truthfully why England failed and always will fail at major tournaments. You won't hear any English TV channel tell it like this - as it really is!

Watched this a couple of times and I laughed so hard. Eish.

4-2-3-1 is all the rage and the English could pull it off. But cut the ancients when implementing it.

GK - Joe Hart

RB - Glen Johnson/Martin Kelly (Which ever one earns the job for Liverpool)
RCB - Phil Jones (He can spark forward runs as well.)
LCB - Joleon Lescott
LB - Leighton Baines

DM - Jack Rodwell/Scott Parker/Gareth Barry
CM - Steven Gerrard/Tom Cleverley/Jack Wilshere

RAM/RW - Alex Oxiade-Chamberlain
CAM - Wayne Rooney (Rooney thrives when he can pass the ball and create as much as he gets to finish. He could become the lynchpin of their attacking movements. See Mesut Ozil. And if you have someone like Wislhere or Cleverley behind him, he can even push in as a second out-and-out sriker plus you should get good interchange play between the two.)
LAM/LW - Daniel Sturridge/Ashley Young (More Sturridge though.)

CF - This is where it gets sloppy. Carroll/Wellbeck seem like the only real options. Or, push Sturridge into this position and carry someone else in the LAM/LW position.

Smalling is better than Jones, especially at CB. Not sure why he gets overlooked.

young had a shocking tournament with minimal contribution from him and milner. he didn't even dive for a penalty or anything. i know you guys hate downing but if the people you select don't produce you must try other options. but to play the same players and expect different is crazy. he should have tried downing at least. he brought on ox and walcott second half anyway. if the wings were more productive england might have been productive.

i hope they change managers soon though. that style of play is horrible. park the bus and counter attacking is a pain to watch...

Young does better on the left tho when he plays on the right he gets confused...

Defensively I think Jones offers more on the RB position rather than the RCB - this won't give him an option to attack

Don't forget to stick Kyle Walker into the defensive team as well

why ashley young was chosen

not questioning his selection. his continued use when he produced nothing is what concerns me. cant even remember an attempted dive for a penalty or anything.

Young probably thought with Gerrard on the pitch he wouldn't need to do any diving. No point trying to outdo the master.

Maybe because Fergie plays him out of position frequently? He saw a lot of action as an RB at club level and that is not a natural position for him.

Smalling at RCB and Jones at RB could work very well, just depends on what Fergie does with them.

I've listed Young as a left-sided player. I don't like the idea of switching wide players. Unless your name is Cristiano Ronaldo, you stay on your natural side.

True, Jones may fit better as an RB and I could see that, just as long as you get a solid option at RCB.

true ...when he was up for that penalty ...i prayed he score for the fact he played krap

but what i would have done is switched welbeck rooney and carrol for a front 3 and taken young off and not welbeck

but yeah he played junk ..eng are out

tonight i hope the bastids spain play some attractive football cause il fall asleep

hahahahahaha

Gerrard was England's best player by a country mile.

He was doing Youngs job together with his own.

There can be only one StevieG, no need for any comparisons.

Can't play junk when the entire team played with a crap tactics and defense minded approach to every match... England should have gone into all the matches with the Win by out scoring the opposition, I felt this team was capable of doing that but I guess Roy saw different, he probably felt the the defence were utter crap so he opted for to stick Welbeck, Rooney Young and Milner as CDM's as well. This junk with the ST and CAM's playing in defence is just not right

Spain

will

pass

and

pass

and

pass

and pass......

/im sleepy...... they still passing and not scoring.

Ye problem is they don't have David Villa anymore so passing is all they good for...

I was watching Spain vs Croatia and Italy vs Ireland with my TV's Picture in Picture function (one streaming via my PC)... I watched Spain for 5 minutes passing between 3 people whilst at the same time Italy had 3 shots, Ireland had 1... needless to say I stopped streaming the Spain game thereafter

Torres should start.

Spaniards are not getting enough quality balls whipped in......

They don't WHIP the ball in, they want to pass the ball in... other thing is they don't seem to pass to Torres either...

Thank God there's only one StevieG, don't wanna put people in bars at risk. As for being England's best player, that doesn't say much. It's like being the least AIDS infected prostitute in a Thai brothel.

Yeah, that's not their style. Their style is to walk the ball into the net. They are toothless because they don't have Villa and Torres has been out done by Villa for a good few years now.

You have to admit he wasn't bad though. A couple of assists, most tackles, most passes (I think) etc etc.
