Everything we know about DStv's streaming service

The DStv Now standalone streaming service is set to launch before the end of March 2020, according to MultiChoice.

MultiChoice South Africa CEO Calvo Mawela first announced in May 2018 that the company was planning to offer an online-only service which does not require a satellite dish and decoder.

I've been DSTV free for 3 years, but will consider subscribing to this if offered at a decent price and it includes sport. I'm not interested in anything other than sport at all.

Let's get the price predictions going.

I'm saying R500pm standalone for Premium or R750pm including a TV Box and setup. If they're smart, they'll partner with ISP's to offer a R1000 10-meg uncapped fibre option which includes Premium and a TV Box with setup.

Excluding standalone, the bundles will be on a 24-month contract. They cannot risk people dropping them once they've got a nice internet connection and realise there more to it than streaming DStv.

If you are planning on including advertising into your subscription streaming offerings then you are doing it wrong.

Would be awesome if you make it possible to subscribe on a per sporting code package instead of just an all sports package. So you have packages, like Rugby/Cricket/Motorsports for R75* each so we can subscribe to what we want to instead of paying for a R400* all Sports package which has stuff that not all will want to watch.

* Prices are a thumb suck.

My wishlist for this service:

Replace Showmax with this please to help with oversubscribing to streaming services and use both services servers for the one service. Hell you can even keep calling it Showmax.

Packages comparable to Netflix with sport add ons per event eg. Super Rugby, Springbok games, Protea test, ODI and T20 series etc.

4K HDR support even if at a extra premium.

Boxoffice rental integration in the app (also 4K HDR).

Samsung Smart Hub recommendation screens on Samsung Smart TVs.

I will then definitely be subscribing to this and dropping some of my current services even if the free DSTV Now stays for sattelite subscribers without the improvements where I can currently have all the content for free I will choose this.

Here is to hoping!

I also think about R500 per month. Excluding sport. Which i think will cost R250 exstra and you wont be able to just take the sport. Some stupid stuff like that.

Cue some convoluted pricing scheme with the premium option being the only one with sport.

Or...

As DStv love to copy Sky with everything they do be prepared for something similar to Sky Now.

Honestly, if its the same 15fps 720p looking crappy quality they have currently i doubt people will want it at any given price point

Won't be cheaper than their existing Dstv. What they may do is bundle an internet connection at a higher price from the looks of it.

20 days to go to the end of March. We will know the pricing soon enough. Anything less than R500 and welcome back DSTV.

4k HDR would need to be gotten from the studios, that will be extra cost to DSTV.
