Hi All

Just thought I'd post this, as I find it quite interesting to see how data usage have changed (and will keep on changing).

Way back in 2006 we had an ISDN line installed at home (work was paying). So we had 64k ISDN to play with when accessing the Internet.

It was definitely faster (and so much better) than piddly dial-up on a modem. Now we know why some people was calling those slo-dems :D

Anyways, the line was later replaced with an 512k ADSL line. Now it was much better, as we were able to purchase prepaid Axxess vouchers, and use that to surf the 'Net.

For that privilege we paid R70 for 1Gb. We managed to make that 1Gb last for longer than a month. Don't ask me how we did it, it was probably due to not having facebook or the such. Email and a bit of web browsing only.

Then, in 2009 Afrihost unleashed the cat amongst the pigeons, with their R29 @ 1Gb offering. A comparison between the R70@1Gb and R87@3Gb was made, the decision was made, and I signed up for a 3Gb package.

At first it was bliss not to have to worry about data consumption and usage. Then Farmville entered the picture. :/

At the end of 2010 I was infrequently topping our account up with a Gig here and there. Afrihost's "Buy two for the price of one" special also helped a lot. Then I decided that I cannot be bothered anymore with doing topping up any longer, and changed the package to a 5GB cap.

Two or three months later, Afrihost changed their pricing again, enabling us to have 10Gb for the price of a (then) 5Gb. Lovely stuff. However, they also lowered the prices of their uncapped data prices, bringing a 1Mb uncapped offering down to R197 - which worked out cheaper if you compare it to a 10Gb @ R145... No more the need to top it up, especially around the end of a month...

The most I've used was 60Gb at a stage, when trying out the uncapped account.

This is the way things is meant to be - no more worries about getting capped while you do youtube searches, facebook posts and so on.

I'm sure that, at some stage, the 1Mb pipe we're using now, will prove to be too insufficient, and we'll have to upgrade. But that is another story for another time...

I really don't know how you remembered all that Ook seriously, I can't even remember how much I paid for lunch yesterday never mind what I was paying in 2009 for interwebs access.

I await the next story...

With a bit of Google-fu comes serious power ;) :D

And they don't call me Ook for nothing :D  :D

I remember the time the 30gig local accounts came out, man I jammed CS source all day :)

Fortunately went straight in at 10gig on 384 line in 2006/2007 IIRC with SAOL for R600

My history is practically identical... except while you were on axxess I was using telkom.

Nice post for many who have forgotten or are unaware of how much has changed :). I too await the next story :D

Don't forget about the R7 call plan, later changed to infinicall or something. Eish, remember the spurt of horror every time you realised the connection just dropped.

I used to curse every time windows installed an update and wanted to restart. :)

I avoided that sort of situation by using Smoothwall back then. Windows can jump up and down for all it wants, my connection remained stable.

Horror of horrors : when I was in Machadodorp, it was either a 16k radio-link or ISDN. Or nothing. (in the year 2000)

At that time there wasn't any 3G networks at all.

ISDN was practically a tad expensive (just married and all that) - so we had to make do with the 16k radio link.

Basically it's a radio unit in which you can plug your phone/modem as normally.

Except for one snag - the link dropped every time a car passed the house we were living in, making the R7 (infinitcall) pretty much useless.

Ah well, those were the days, can't remember what I paid for internet access at that time (Mweb dialup). Think it was R127.00 (according to BigBear's post, thanks!). When their prices keep going up and up, I terminated the contract.

I was one of those :o

Why did you opt for ISDN in 2006? ADSL was available from end 2002.
