Those CCTV cameras are quite usefull as where i live there has been almost no crime and NO MURDERS in the last 6 months...

Would be pretty hard to post this thread without electricity. You think the UK isn't going to fall into an energy crises? It has before you know.

SA has positives and negatives, but I am sure I will think of at least one positive while drunk. Britain had the black plague, SA had the wheel.. err no, they didnt - oh yes, they had the Battle of blood river.

Britain started TV in 1933, SA had...err...umm.. grass and twigs. It was only in 1970 when SABC was formed.

SA has the kruger park... UK has Freddy Kruger :D (sarcasm)

You cannot compare SA and UK and USA .. or ANY 2 countries.. they are unique and all have their own challenges.

I just prefer the challenge of 'which pub should I visit' and not 'damn there is a conflict in my diary for 2 funerals... which one!'
SA has small problems now, but if they are not fixed NOW - they are going to be exponentially bigger in 10 years time. (Education for one in SA is **NOT** free - and only the affluent can afford it.) the future of SA is NOT the people of TODAY, its the 7 year olds NOW.

So stop thinking about 'me me me' and think about the kids... THEY will be the ones managing your retirement home.

Hence, I choose a place where my kids can feel safe, be educated and be in a place where their potential can be realised -without prejudice-

I hung around on a British motoring forum, and the number of guys posting about car thefts, break-ins and vandalism was a bit of an eye-opener. Vandalism especially - seems to be hugely more common in the UK than in SA.

Has to be Essex :D I had my car broken in to... the thieves could not even break the locks on a 1993 MG Metro.

Within 2 hrs, the police forensics had been and taken fingerprints. 4hrs later they had arrested a yob.

THAT is the difference. £40 and all the locks and broken window was replaced.

Let me rephrase... at least i have CONSTANT electricity. ;)

And as for the UK maybe having a power crisis in the future, with the amount of money im being paid here and the qaulity of life compared to SA, ill take my chances... :D:cool::D

Will do. I love cold weather. :D

The weather has actually been brilliant since i got here. Only rained about 5 times in the last 2 months, clear deep blue skies all day and the place looks magical when covered in frost in the morning... :D

Bearing in mind this is supposed to be the worst weather of the year - February - it's been sunny and mild for two weeks ;)

Yep, last summer in the UK was pretty bad, but hey, my bro told me the weather in joburg was k@k. Rain rain and more rain, so there ya go.

It's a complete myth that the weather in the UK is crap, what is true, is that it's inclement - it changes often.

In fact, it's a damn side more interesting than typical Joburg weather - same old day in, day out.

Personally, I love joburg and South Africa, but also love the UK two - am I allowed to do that? Of course I am.
 
Well, it's not the whole truth, is it?

Is South Africa not a stunningly beautiful land?
Does it not have some incredibly talented and good people?

That's a positive to both those questions.

It's balance and perception - yes, indeed, South Africa is truly in a difficult spot, there's no doubt about that.

The sad thing is that the more negativity there is thrown into the fire, the higher the flames go.

It's one of the reasons I left the country.
 
There are different forms of criticism. One could criticise the weather in SA as being ghastly, the scenery as dreadful and people as greedy - but that's not what they're
saying. They're saying the living conditions suck not because of the previous
reasons but because of mismanagement by those entrusted to manage the country for all.
 
Oh, I don't know, I've heard expats critisising absolutely everything, or being completely generic "the country is a crap" - the worst culprits are those who haven't been back for years.

I think with that type of person, they really have lost the plot - they dream of the "good old days" instead of just getting on with life. They basically never really left South Africa, if you know what I mean.

Heck, I've been MIA from these forums for months, 'cos life goes on.
A phone call from my Bro in joburg triggered me to come back and visit and it's an interesting forum. I'm guilty of just visiting this section, because the rest is totally irrelevant to me for the most part.

If I can lend a little bit of 'balance' to things, that's good.

Of course, I stand a very real chance of not being able to post anything relevant about SA very soon - after all, my life has moved on and I haven't been back for over two years... and the entire site is pretty much irrelevant to me now.

I'll hang in for a while longer, as an expat so to speak :D
 
I've got nothing wrong with people that persue a better life elsehwere. Hell I probably wouldn't be here if my family hadn't. What I have a problem with are the first-on-heart hypocrites who are the first to say that love living abroad when all they do is moan and long for things like Mrs. Balls chutney etc.

Yeah, exactly "there's it" ;)

I've heard them in the pub, dissing SA like there's no tomorrow and then saying "Ya, but I've found a great place to get biltong"

I think, to be honest, that expats as a concept truly sucks.

It's like the sad old British gits in foreign places hanging onto "empire", instead of assimilating the culture...

... come to think of it, that type of thing is fairly rampant in South Africa :D
