So this is my situation

I am 25 years old
I haven't had car insurance before
The car will be used for business use as well
The car I'm insuring is a VW 1.6 Polo Vivo

This seems to be the worst combination of details for car insurance, and as you can imagine, I am getting raped on premiums.

So far I've had quotes from Outsurance for R3000, Discovery for R2600, and R3500 through a broker who uses Santam. Discovery quoted an excess of R3500, the others should be similar.

In any case, does anyone have any ideas (I don't know if you allowed to insure under someone elses name) or perhaps a preferred insurer I should contact to get a better premium.

Still need to try a few, MiWay, Budget and the like. Also having a rethink if I should get the Polo Vivo. For the amounts quoted I can get a spare car on finance :erm:

What do you define as business use? Are you getting some sort of subsidy at least?

I wouldn’t buy a Polo Vivo. Number 1 hijacked car in SA, hence the premium. Couple that with your other stats and yea, you’re a prime target for getting screwed, unfortunately.

Why not a Honda Jazz, i20 or similar?

Yeah we get a monthly car allowance and a petrol card.

As for business use, I do visit clients offices or go to factory sites at times.

Your car will be used for business?

It's a 1.6, apparently those are considered high performance cars lol.
It's a VW, we all know about VW and South Africans.
You're 25 with a 1.6, with no insurance history.

Rather go to Miway or king price, or speak to a financial advisor. Budget will tell you sh!7 that doesn't make sense. I don't think there's much you can do, it will be expensive for about a year or so then you can go back and ask for a review.

I remember when I got my car about 3 years ago, I was paying R3k on insurance, because it was a performance car and I was 25.

Use an insurance broker. They are generally able to negotiate better rates.

EINA, that's all that I can say.

You can have your car insured under your mom/dad name you as the regular driver. This is legal, had mine like this for years.

Unfortunately you aren't gonna win with insurance.

How often do you go out to clients with your own vehicle? If it's a couple times a month then you should be fine insuring for personal use.

My first car insured was a Corsa Lite during articles. Car costed R1600pm, Insurance was R1000pm for the first year.

I'd stay away from a Vivo to try bring your premium down.

+1

Paying about R2 200 for 3 cars and two properties with Momentum.

Like most say, it's your age, lack of history, the car you've chosen, and insuring it for business use that's the problem.

Rather go to Miway or king price, or speak to a financial advisor.

I'd suggest a broker, not an FA. Also - Miway is dodge, with me they gave a great price for the first year, and it shot up the next year. I got all kinds of excuses, all of them BS from my point of view, so I left them. I can't comment on King Price.

Do that at your own risk. I know of many people that have done this, been in an accident, and got shafted when insurance found out that the "primary driver" wasn't the one driving the car most of the time. The discounted premiums aren't worth it if something goes wrong, unless you're seriously lucky and rolling in the good karma.

Yeah thinking I might have to just bite the bullet and pay up for a bit.

Need to look into this.

Is there a minimum limit to how many times = business use. So far I only go out 5-6 times a months to clients. But that could realistically increase in the future so that's an issue.

That depends on the policy. An old colleague of mine got into an accident on his way to a client, and had to lie for insurance to pay out. Make sure before you only insure for private use.
It also depends on where you live and where you park your car. Another colleague parked in the street in the Randburg CBD at night. Needless to say, he was also raped with premiums.

Auto and General gave me the best premiums back in the day, and their service was actually very good. Give them a try.

This sounds about normal

I am 26 only had my license since May 2017 and have never been insured.

Got my car In November [Peugeot 207 HDi] and the best at that time was King Price at R1800 but with a R15000 excess.

Last month I changed to Momentum, paying R1820 but my excess is R3000.

Still crazy but honestly it was the best at the time.

I will shop around again in May as then it'd be a year since I got my license and see if that changes anything.

Key word, "Regular Driver" - Perfectly legal and allowed

Sure, if you don't mention that you are the regular driver and they maybe check access records at your office park for example then you are in trouble. But if you state you are the regular driver, then no issue, only a difference in premium perhaps.

Lots of bad advice been given, please work through a broker and get authorized advice.

You need to read that again, he said you as the regular driver, my insurance is the same, on my parents name and me as the regular driver.
