hi. can someone explain to me why my dailup tests faster than my vodacrap 3g card i did a few speed tests on speed test. net using servers around the world, these are the results.

3g vodacom. upload 23 kps
download 74 kps

dailup 56k upload 133kps
download 43 kps

my telkom dailup also uses a wireless system and also works on the same principal as vodacom
for vodacom i even installed an aerial to get the signal stronger and when i connect, it shows that i connect at 236kps
my dailup connects at 52kps:eek:
thanks

Location? Device? And by the sounds of things you are in a remote-ish area? Do you fall within the Vodacom coverage map?

Vodacom3G is the best person to explain this, but give more details, like what area you are in etc.

well i live in the free state near kroonstad.does somebody have a link handy to ask them this[vodacom]

thanks for the reply guys, i fall into the edge reception area.and the thing is i am right smack in the middle of that so the signal should be strong, and there is a vodacom tower not 10 km from where i live.

So run a few speed tests (at least 3) at speed.vodacom.co.za and post the results.

Try doing some speed test during times when the network should be too busy. If you do fall in an EDGE area you should get much better speeds than that. My first guess would be that the tower you are using is congested (if that's the correct term).

Tryed putting a prepaid MTN sim in the data card ?

I only get Vodacom GPRS where i live (HSDPA 2 mile up the road)
I agree with you Voda's GPRS does seem worse than dial up.

With Mtn i can get HSDPA speeds so i need to use them for data.

EDGE is almost twice as fast (download) according to the figures you supplied. upload is pretty much irrelevant, unless you are sending lost of data, like large emails. for browsing though, it doesn't really matter.

AFAIK, 74kbps is normal for EDGE.

it shows that i connect at 236kps
i think that is the speed of the link between your PC and the data card.

thanks i did a few of those, no real improvement.

will a prepaid sim [mtn] card work with a huwaei 220 data card.

Can you post the results so we can see what they are?

A MTN pre-paid sim should work in a Vodacom E220.

You mentioned that you have an antenna for your device? What exactly did you get?

74 kbps is more like GPRS speeds under EDGE coverage (85 kbps max or 44 kbps with just plain GPRS).

EDGE should be around 236 kbps if you get the maximum speed.

Did you check that your dasboard is set up to use EDGE speeds? Might be that a setting needs to be changed there (I don't have experience with the Vodacom dash).

The 74 kbps may be because the tower doesn't support full speed EDGE, or that the backhaul connection does not have the capacity.

Something is not right here, my 3g phone never went so low on speed.net....MY VIRGIN SPEED TEST gaves me over 100kbps

we are talking EDGE here... not 3G!

236kbps is the theoretical maximum throughput, which is impossible to achieve. I use Vodacom EDGE regularly and 74kbps is typical.

1800Kbps is the theoretical maximum throughput for 3G/HSDPA, and i get it most of the time. Nothing is impossible ;)

how do you get 1800 ? lol do you sit by a tower ? seriously though how the hell

Well I get around 1300 - 1600kbps. On a very good day I've even had the occasional 2000+kbps on the Vodacom speed test. That's with a pretty low signal strength of -85dBm (Approx 2 bars in the dash).

Just did a speed test to see what it gives here at home (not the best of signals); The results [screenshot]:
Download: 1887 kbps
Upload: 325 kbps

The MTN dash showed a signal of 1 bar and E620tool shows -95 dBm.
