Plug and pray lol
I think I'd be able to figure it out (main reason why I want to go ASUS is familiarity and trust) but if not I've got a friend in who works in IT properly who could probably help me out.
Any keywords I need to watch out for?

Ubiquiti Unifi - approx R1200 from Takealot

Best solution.

endof.

There are a couple of threads attesting to this solution

http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/569991-Wi-Fi-Home-Setup?highlight=ubiquiti+unifi

PS: Reason I am so enthusiastic about the Ubiquiti product is that I wasted upwards of 2K trying all sorts of other 'consumer' range extenders with nothing but gnashing teeth to show for it, before stumbling upon the Ubiquiti's.

Hi Reflex84,

I've got a Netis WF2420 range extender I am selling for R200.00. PM me if you're interested.

use any other old adsl router and use that to extend the wifi hotspot.

so here is the solution to my little router issue...
1) Enable RIP v1 on both routers.
2) disable DHCP on the second router
3) enable DHCP on the primary router
4) configure the Wifi on the secondary router and connect a terminal (phone,tv etc). The terminal will then register on the primary router with an ip address of 0.0.0.0 - and it will show the MAC address of the terminal.
set up a static address within the DHCP range of the primary router and assign it to the MAC address.
5) make sure that the wifi channels are different on the two router.

This this and so much this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I moved house at the beginning of the month and had a TPlink something or other 450mb For R700. The previous house was not very big at all, but even in the middle of the house the signal was just crappy through out. It was no longer than 15m between the 2 rooms needing the signal. It was just bad with dead spots all over the place.

Moved into the new house which was larger and decided to do my homework. AP's are crap, range extenders do near f***all.
Ubiquiti... a little bit on the pricey side but with really solid reviews and 120m range, MIMO etc

In a house now much longer than the previous, the AP is sitting on the ceiling boards (not yet mounted) and does not drop more than 5Db in any part of the house through several doors and walls.
It's simply amazing and worth every cent.

I didnt spend R2.5k on Ubiquiti, I wasted R700 on the TPlink.

This hardware can send signals for kilometers. Seen it work wonders.

How do these Ubiquiti systems work , is the setup similar to wifi extenders.
Do you plug one into your router, and the place a few more to extend the wifi range over wifi ?
If I buy the UB-UAP-LR, would the others be the same, or different models.
Just trying to get my head around this, I have about 5 wifi's/powelines around the house, and it's a pain switching between them

The round UAP units are traditional plug in with network cable APs
Theyve released new mesh APs that are meant to augment existing infrastucture as wireless repeaters but I haven't seem them in action

Oh dear ! I think I'll be replacing my whole network setup again. Only place I can find the new mesh kit is on weable.co.za , haven't bought from there before though

Ok so I bought the UB-uap-Lr, great signal, what would I need to buy to extend this network in grid mode?

Cabled or uncabled extend?

Uncabled either more UAPs (in wireless uplink mode) or Mesh APs (in repeater mode)

Probably cabled over power line Ethernet , but that may actually be slower than extended. Important thing is that mesh is possible , thanks psywolf
