External storage specials @ Game

The drive inside was manufactured October 2012, so perhaps old stock they are trying to get rid of.
 
Were the drives you bought for your own private use SouthBit? Interested why you went 3TB rather than 4TB. Or maybe you know better....?

For my own private use to stick into a HP MS ;)

3TB for R999 is way better value than a 4TB at close to double the price. Also the 4TBs run too hot for my liking.

True, but if you want to maximise potential storage in the HPMS then one has to trade off in the short term.

The date code of the ST4000DM000's I extracted yesterday were Mar 2013.

The biggest challange if/when we need to return these under warranty will be to remove the fingerprints on the RFI shield ;)

On the heat issue, I have two of them in the middle of a preclear cycle on my NAS box at present. Both of them are currently at 32C, with the other 3 in the
spun down state sitting at 24C.

Edit: OT, yes, but an interesting comparison here which compares the DX (7200 rpm) and DM (5900 rpm) models.

Those are good temps, HP MS does a good job of keeping drives cool. Let me rather say, I don't like 4 platter drives :)
 
How so? Or is it only relevant when I have to bring it to you?

LOL, partly that. The more moving parts the more to go wrong. 8 heads in that 4TB, 6 heads in the 3TB. More chance of a head dying when you have 8 than when you have 6, just stats.
 
Okay, I will keeps all the bits in case I have to call in the warranty ;)
 
If you're in/around Cape Town, a friend of mine just grabbed two drives from the Bayside Game. He said they still had a few left if people are looking.

Another crash and burn. Had the click-click of death this morning. Luckily it is used for secondary backup, so I still have my primary backup. I'm going to return it tomorrow morning. Might persuade them to give me WD ;)

No, a propriety USB connector is used. So if at some point you want to connect the drive internally & you pull it out of the case, you will be in for a surprise - a problematic surprise !
Personally, i would go for an ext drive that uses the standard SATA connection.

Apologies for hijacking the thread, is there any way to establish who the OEM supplier of a WD drive may have been.
I have a WD Scorpio Black that has failed & there are issues regards warranty status. At the end of it all, WD now say it is an OEM drive.
Any idea which OEM's install those drives as standard equipment ?

Incorrect, 3.5" externals are ALL SATA drives inside, it's only 2.5" which have USB PCBs.

You could drive and speak to Drive Control, but if it's OEM then it needs to be returned through the channel it was purchased through, if still in warranty.
