External storage specials @ Game

Well.... That was NOT the most fun you could have with your clothes on!

Anyway, after much shopping, prying and screw driving, and some swearing, I have 4 x 3TB WD Green drives installed and RAIDed in my Microserver. 7.2TB available, and 7 hours to go to copy my crap off the USB drives. Finally, a storage setup that should last me a few years. Now to decide what to do with:

1 x 1TB Seagate internal
1 x 1TB Seagate external
1 x 2TB Seagate internal
1 x 2TB Seagate external
4 x 1TB WD externals
4 x Empty WD USB drive cases

Maybe a backup?

The important thing is I survived without too many mental scars.

ANy hints/tips for extracting the drives? I'm going to do the same to two tonight.

What are you using for the RAID? Why you only have 7.2TB available? Shouldn't you have over 8TB available with that setup?

It's a bit hard to explain without pictures, but I'll try.

The case consists of two parts: The shiny wrap-around section and the vented drive holder (interlocking "C" shapes). The drive is held in the vented section, which slides out of the shiny section on "rails", so to remove it, you wedge a screwdriver in between the shiny section and the vented section, on the side of the usb port. Use the screwdriver to unclip four clips, about 4cm from each corner, and slide the whole holder out. Don't worry about the top and bottom vented sides - that's where the rails are, so they will slide - no need to unclip.

Once separated, I simply squeezed the drive out by pushing on the bumpers on the side opposite the USB port. Careful not to scratch the drive against the "clips" on the top and bottom.

Then just unscrew the two screws holding the USB board, and unplug the board.

Purchased 2 for my Synology DS213. The drives inside are the WD30EZRX which are compatible.

I have used just a butter knife to remove the casing which slides out from the back and a Phillips to undo 2 screws one the top and another on the side of the controller board.

Remember you risk losing your warranty when removing the drives. I have attached some images of the process.

These WD My Books are very easy to remove the drive from. Just use a bank card to slide around the back edges and the main piece slides out of the side casing, dead simple. And you won't damage it at all, so if you want to take the drive out just keep the case if you ever need it for warranty.

No, brand new bought yesterday. Removed from external case, plugged into PC3000 and stayed BSY :) Tried a few times, same thing. Eventually just came right by itself. Very odd. Seems OK now. Don't trust it though.
