I need to get an external HDD to backup the important stuff on my pc.

Game currently has a special on a 2TB WD Elements 3.5" drive for R848.

Is this a good buy, or is there anything better worth looking at?

Thanks.

Does an external 3TB still have the 2TB space limitation in Windows, i.e. do I still need to initialise the disk as GPT, does the external enclosure take care of the issue, or how does it work?

I have an internal 3TB but cannot see past 2TB in Windows 7 x64. The BIOS only detects it as 746GB so I fear my motherboard might not support disks larger than 2TB.

Yes.

Treat as internal storage, but just a slow version of it. Also update your BIOS.

But rather buy what you need. I've found that it works better for me to have multiple small drives than one expensive big one. Also check out Incredibl Connections online store, they have daily specials and delivery is usually free.

@cbrunsdonza: Thanks, will do!

@sal12344: Thanks for the heads up. My pc doesn't have USB3.0 ports so for now I don't care too much for USB3.0.

Had this issue with a Verbatim external 3TB drive, read some thread explaining that they come pre-formatted in 2TB and 1TB segments because not all PC's can read 3TB drives. I emailed Verbatim support and they sent me a tool with which I could change the drive config to one 3TB drive. WD might also have a tool like that.

Usb 2.0 not worth it then.
They open very well with no external damage. I still have some pre flood ones that I am keeping as spares for my microservers.
Last weeks Verbatim specials were good in price only. Only 1 year guarantee on them. In fact Games specials seem to be 1 year Guarantee drives even the Seagates they had a while back.

So I can chuck the enclosure and slot a 3Tb drive into my micro server for a grand?! Winner!

Yup

I just upgrade my PS3 using a 750GB 2.5" external for R500. Turned out to be the same brand as what was already installed. Seems that both its cheaper to do this on both 2.5" & 3.5" at the moment

Google published some facts about hard drive reliability, if it does not fail within 6 months then you can look at least 5 years of use.

So I picked up the WD Elements 2TB USB2.0 external from Game for R848 on Friday afternoon. Then I do a BIOS update on my mothernoard on Friday eve. Motherboard dies. Buy a new motherboard on Saturday morning. New motherboard has three USB3.0 ports. I kick my own ass.

Sometimes the order in which $hit happens is just screwed up

I'll hang onto the 2TB - Will just use it as an extra extra backup drive now.
