Extremely retarded shaping on the IS network

Internet Solutions in East London has no problem, so your problem is localized. Enjoy.

This is the THIRD time you have posted the same, useless information in this thread. No wonder you have almost 25 000 posts! I personally think a moderator should take action here, but I guess if that was the MyBB policy, that would have happened a long time ago.

I think it is very clear by now the issue is localized to the northern suburbs of Cape Town and perhaps other areas, though if you continue to spam this thread stating the obvious, there will be no space for actual feedback.

You quote me explaining that it is specific to the IS backbone since a Telkom Internet account works perfectly, yet you ignore that fact, or are you just blindly advertising for WA?

missed that sorry. wouldnt be throwing my weight around if I were you. 11 posts doesnt translate to much on this forum, especially when you incapable of using the search function. and yes I will "blindly advertise" a product that I have sworn by for years. you can search for that too

Does using IS blind your vision of the search function. IS shaping and etc, etc, etc, been discovered and discussed to the nth degree on MyBB. Maybe your IS account is so bad it doesn't load the search function...

this ^^

Yah, stupid me, to think I posted in this thread to try assist you (you know, via a process of elimination). However, you are behaving like a spoiled child. You deserve what you get. Cheers.

Fourth post btw.

The amount of posts on my brand new account has nothing to do with the quality of my posts, and most certainly has nothing to do with the issue being discussed in this thread.

If the posts ghoti has made in this thread are anything to go by, a large post count simply means the user is good at spamming threads with irrelevant info and repeatedly reposting the same obvious facts.

And yet again, you have posted nothing constructive, without even reading my previous posts, else you would have seen I responded to Wasp_21 with following:
I did some brief searching and did not find anything detailed enough to matter, but the search functionality is quite limited due to the fact that searching for words that are less than 3 characters long, such as "IS", is not allowed at all.

You have not assisted anyone, but I think I have said enough already, and will say no more in the hope that you will stop spamming this thread.

you sir, are a moron. lol

here is a thread with 1162 pages, 17425 replies with discussion on DYNAMIC SHAPING

I suggest you go read it.

would you like me to spoon feed you some more? :)

Oh my god, would a moderator please do something about these off topic spammers? Does MyBB even have moderation anymore?

This topic has NOTHING to do with the MWEB backbone, it is an issue specific to the IS backbone and only affects certain areas, which would would know if you read almost any post in this thread. It is now very clear that you only care about increasing your post count.

Further more, this topic addresses multiple issues that certain users on the IS backbone have been experiencing over the past few months. Although I cannot be sure, due to the search functions keyword limitations, I think it is unlikely that anyone has gone into detail on the per-socket TCP connection throttling I have observed.

Now could you please stop being so selfish and allow users that are actually experiencing issues to use this thread for the purpose it was created for?

thanks for my new sig!! ROFL :D

i rest my case. thanks dude you totally made my afternoon.

MWEB has their own backbone, just as SAIX, IS and WebAfrica do. When IS is completely screwed MWEB is usually still fine.

Every post you make simply another nail in your coffin, showing just how clueless you are, and that you care about nothing but increasing your post count.

always smile :) (thats one more post for me)

seriously though, how's the troubleshooting going?

Seriously, wtf is wrong with you people? If you have nothing constructive to say, GTFO of the thread.

For what it's worth, I am on IS uncapped, and I have noticed the following issues:

Youtube in particular, since I started with an IS uncapped (el cheapo) account from Axxess at the beginning of the year - most videos only load a third of the way. Using free download manager to download videos would work some of the time, other times the entire vid would be completely corrupt.
Moved to openweb gold, on IS backbone still... youtube has only been slightly better. Videos tend to load most (but not all) of the time. It has improved over the last month or so though.

HTTPS downloads (from android market on my phone via my home wifi) - most downloads fail. They start off ok, then just fade and die. It has improved over the last month or so, too.

LOTRO game updates... on the old Axxess account, it was IMPOSSIBLE for me to download them.
There's only been one major update since i moved to openweb gold (That I can recall), it was impossible to get it when I tried in the evenings after work. Had a day off and tried it one morning, and by some miracle actually managed to get it finished.

Minecraft - playing on my server hosted in Germany, constantly get timeouts. However I tend to blame minecraft :p

SSH - Haven't really noticed much of an issue, though I connect on non-standard ports.

In terms of the android downloads, I created an SSH tunnel for the device via my server in Germany, and most of the downloads tend to complete. Not sure what that proves, though :p

I really hope that a moderator notices this thread and takes some sort of action, but in any case, I will no longer be responding to any future posts unless they directly correspond to the issue that my original post describes.

Well we tried a process of elimination geographically based. You are in Jozi'/PTA, the complainer is in Cape Town and I am in East London. We all use IS uncapped. I have absolutely no problems with any services and neither do any of my clients (have around 300 on IS Uncapped). Though most of them are based in East London a couple are in Cape Town and Jozi (non have mentioned connectivity issues). I downloaded the entire LOTRO game and updates from my home uncapped account and did not have issues. The only clients I do get complaining are those slowed down by the star rating system.

Is it not relevant to get feedback on what is working and what is not working? Heck even the complainer was going on that perhaps its just northern cape town. You are nowhere near there.

The thread title is "retarded shaping on the IS network". Since I use their network a lot and am not experiencing the same problems as you guys I thought it relevant to tell as that might help you find out if its a localized problem.

Since I doubt we get "East london only works really great accounts", and that we all use the same basic lite IS accounts, that issues that are being experienced have something to do with localization. Why is that?

The hours you describe & the lack of star rating info, leads me to believe that your star rating is the problem here.

Could be wrong but that's what it sounds like.

So what are the updated conditions at the moment. IE usage, star rating, speed, ping tests during & after hours, local & abroad.

Pressuming you've done all the standard disconnect reconnect business? Does it spike when freshly connected for a short period?

As I have mentioned before, this issue does not appear to be limited to uncapped IS accounts.

An account thats status is "Full Access" exhibits the behaviour I explained in detail in my first post.

Local pings usually spikes between 90 and 130 starting between about 8 and 9am almost every week day and drops again very close to 5pm, but today for instance, it spiked like usual earlier but is back down again now, so behaviour is not very consistent.

The ping I get on an Afrihost per-GB capped bandwidth account is identical, usually being high throughout the day, but right now for instance, it's perfect. Capped bandwidth shouldn't even have a star rating anyway?

Reconnecting the PPPOE connection helps nothing, but as I said before, when a persistent TCP socket, such as IRC or SSH freezes up for long periods of time, opening a new socket connection to whichever server works perfectly, but grinds to a halt again after anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes.

It is usually way faster for me to open a new instance of my SSH or SFTP client, connect and login again and then close the old one when it times out waiting for the socket connection to respond, than it is to wait for it to respond.

I are also in the Norf, and can possibly attest to this issue. We have VPN tunnels coming in which don't seem to be affected but if I leave my ssh connection running, go off and do something then come back 8/10 times it will be disconnected from whatever server I was on. I have never timed it and it has never actually bothered me, but I will try to make more of an effort to "count" the time it takes. Our latency always seems to be on average about 130ms since I can remember.

We have a 4-10meg Afrihost/IS connection upcapped. Usage on average is about 45-50 gig p/m.

Call Internet Solutions ;)
The point of this thread is to be able to gather as much detail about a very inconsistent issue.

Unless we have something concrete to give to IS, that shows that there is a serious issue on their network which affects many users, they will simply blame Telkom as per usual.

I get the point of the thread, maybe the title could be better though to identify the area etc. So I'm guessing you've contacted them & they are "not aware" of any issues on their network in the specified area?

I'm one for jump starting the process & collecting info ;)

Hope you come right.

Here is a summary of the detailed feedback I received from another user:

I have 12 x 4mb ADSL lines running into my office.
8 of these lines are IS 4mb Uncapped/Unshaped Business accounts.
2 of these run Mweb uncapped/unshaped Business accounts.
1 runs 20gb unshaped capped account and 1 runs openweb gold uncapped account. (shaped)

About 2-3 months ago I noticed a ping problem on all my IS adsl lines, at this stage I only had the 8x IS lines and the 2x Mweb lines. My traceroute looked almost exactly like yours, with a ping spike from my Modem's IP address to the exchange in the region of 130-140ms.

This did not happen on the 2x mweb accounts. This quite obviously pointed to a fault on the IS network. I logged a call, but I was told it's a Telkom fault, and I must log a call with them.

Some people pointed out about your star rating, I can for no reason think why myself who pays the premium for a business uncapped/unshaped have a star rating. There should be NO shaping whatsoever on these accounts.

I am from a town called Oudtshoorn, Western Cape. About 55km from George.

So it appears that although the issue only affects certain areas, it's not limited to the northern suburbs in Cape Town.
