F1 2011 thread

That is a bit bizarre, i guess we will have to see how effects redbull and the rest of the field, surely everyone will now be slower so nothing will change?

McLaren seem to think that RB have been running more aggressive maps in quali compared to the rest of the field - hence their blazing qualifying pace. If it evens out qualifying, and we end up with a Hamilton or Button pole... Good night RB.

Yea but surely mclaren were running the same thing? so they would now be slower meaning they will still be behind redbull, unless my understanding is totally off but why would teams not be running the best engine mapping for quali?

Mclaren seem to think many things about redbull and it will be interesting to see in the next few races how it pans out :D.

Well, sure... but how do you otherwise explain RB being so much faster in quali, taking into account that it hasn't been translating to race pace?

We'll know in two days' time. ;)

The only thing i can think of is that the redbulls run much better without a fully belly, when their belly is full the pace is not the same. It could also be redbull warm their tyre's up faster. I do know one thing mclaren suck at quali but they are very very good when race day comes so i can only imagine it must have something to do with the fuel load and how the cars react to a full belly and running on fumes :D

I still think the carbon fibre weave in that front nose is a big deal. i.e. the nose cone itself bends, not the fins, hence the fact that it passes tests with load on either end. They came up with a pretty cool solution to work around the testig rules.

Changes to stop redbull round 1 : failed

Vettel destroys the comp once again. Hamilton once again fails to impress.

Interesting stuff

Well with the pace the mclaren showed i would have expected him to nail that last lap and land up second. He fluffed it, so for me he failed to impress. Should have nailed second spot easily. The ham of old would have done it, this new ham is a bit dodge i reckon :p

I thought Button failed to impress quite frankly. Hamilton was the quickest driver on the day not in a RB...

Has anyone else been watching "Formula 1 Retro" on ESPN Classics?
The series has been looking at F1 in the 70's... Year by year for '70 to '74 are the ones I've caught so far and its been brilliant. Rindt, Stewart and Fittipalldi as world champions with Jodie Scheckter, who was just starting his F1 career, popping up in the last episodes. They have found some fantastic footage of the "real" Kyalami as well... stuff I've never seen before. :D
It's amazing how different the whole circus was back then... Spectators walking alongside the track in Monaco during the races, 12 lap races at the Ring, Oxygen feeds to the driver's helmets for a little O2 in case of fire, Sunday morning races in Spain so spectators could get to the bull fights in the afternoon, cars starting in a 3,2,3,2,3,2 formation, Frank Williams managing the March team, Bernie as a team owner... Also a little sad watching drivers like Rindt, Cevert, Revson and Peterson 'cos you know what's going to happen and when it's going to happen.
19H00 daily, ESPN Classics... Really worth a watch.

yeah seen a few already. great stuff from an era when F1 drivers were real men and death was just a split second away! pity they don't show all the accidents. amazing how casual they were about safety back then. mind boggling!!!

I agree that Hamilton could have done better in quali, but I think if he start well today, and not loose position he can easily end up at least overtaking Webber. A win will not be easy

I dunno i think the ham is perfectly placed to win the GP, i have a feeling the mclaren will go better than redbull today.

He just needs to get off the line well and he should win today i think. No silly accidents, good start and solid driving will see him home today, although i fear that was an assessment of the old ham. Watch out for alonso as well, he has rocket boosters on the ferrari it seems at the start.

Hell, i'll be satisfied if ham just finishes the blinking race. Brain fart coupled with a rush of adrenaline and it's game over.

Seriously though at least 3rd place. Anything less is a fail.

Just some clarity on the whole engine mapping thing - according to Charlie Whiting from the FIA:

What has been outlawed is the teams taking a laptop to the car after qualifying and writing new engine maps to the ECU. The drivers' ability to modify engine maps from inside the car during a race remains unaffected. Quite OK in my book; the cars are meant to be in parc ferme conditions after quali after all.

Meh. Valencia remains a snore-fest. It is by far my most disliked track on the calendar.

At least we're back to some proper tracks (Silverstone, Nurburgring, Spa, Monza etc.) for the middle part of the season.

Yeah, not been a great race, especially after the last race, which was an absolute thriller!

Hmmm, so "U, D, U, D, L, R, L, R, Select, Start" and you're in cheat mode? :D

They must throw Valencia off the circuit. The most dull race out. Corner 1 start was the only piece of action worth anything.
