F1 2012 thread

Although Williams is improved I dont see it being regular podiums yet...

Perhaps not with outright pace. However, Pastor did 25 laps on the tyres and still managed to keep Alonso at bay, so it looks like the FW34 is kind on the Pirellis.

If that is indeed the case and not just a once-off, it bodes well for their overall race strategy which could see them using the undercut to gain and keep positions towards the end of races.

And Red-Bull found their dominating form after Bahrain... And Mercs after China... Honestly will have to wait untill a few more races to really saw which teams are the best. ATM I'm inclined to think its between Lotus and McLaren. Lotus had good showings at most of the race, while McLaren only really had 1 shocker in Bahrain. A front wing doesn't make a car with midfield pace a winner.

I guess we shall see.
Monaco is a street track, almost impossible to overtake, accidents all over the place, easy for back markers to score points.
Will eat my words if Maldonado or Senna make the a podium spot.

A track like Monaco actually showcases talent.

I don't believe Williams will suddenly contend for the championship but in the hands of Maldonado, it showed legitimate pace. It's not as if the rain came and threw everything on it's head. The only break he got was Hamilton's demotion, but even then he'd have finished 2nd at worst.

It is most certainly a match for the Saubers and Mercs on race pace and it is clearly quicker than a Force India. There is a very fine line seperating Mercedes, Sauber and Williams in terms of race pace and on occassion the Saubers and Williamses have even been able to harass Alonso and the Loti. The Mercs seem to lack race pace and do not look after their tyres at all.

Rating drivers on stats like that is bias. The cars them selves also have a part to play. Don't think any one can deny that the Red-Bull is fast in clean air, that's why the did so well last year. Behind another car though they struggle. Their fast in corner and slow on the straights, a trait of how the car was designed, but still making overtaking hard as you cant over take in most corners, either over take into the corner, need straight line speed, or get better drive out of the corner, but then still hampered by straight line speed. Webber last year had a shock, over one lap they were close, but Webber got stuck in traffic and couldn't do anything. In clean air he had quite a number of fastest laps. Also what's to say that the drivers don't use their cars to their max in quali, last year Hamilton had a few blistering qualifying laps then when it really counted he made small errors costing him. In that sense he didn't put the car where it belonged but come race day over 50 odd laps with a faster car he can over take slower cars ect.
Hell look at schumi last year, he had the most in race overtakes purely because he lost his front wing so many times and had to retake positions from slower cars.
What I'm getting at is that you cant rate drivers on stats, there are more variables involved.

On to Pastors win, one hit wonder IMO. He hasn't really shown any hint of being a top driver. Williams was a fast car trough out the weekend, and he did do well getting that victory, but average driver at best he didn't have much on good old Barrichello

Rating drivers by you and I will almost always have bias, how the heck can you as someone who has never raced F1 even hope to rate a driver? It's always going to be opinion. Of course the majority of the championship is down to having the right car - Ask Maldonado, Button, Alonso, Schumacher, Hamilton and Vettel.

As for rating Maldonado as average, it's consistency and time in a good car that will prove his worth, but don't ask for miracles if his car is rubbish. It was good the last race, hopefully the whole team can get jacked up and keep it up.

These day F1 is less about driver talent and more about how good the car is.

So wait the 5 drivers who have won are talentless gimps who can barely drive?

If you think about it f1 used to be about the best cars, now we actually have talented drivers who have access to good cars. Most of the guys are talented drivers or why would they be picked to driver in f1? I am glad to see the back of the days when f1 was about getting the best ride while someone who is perhaps slightly better gets a tractor to go racing in.

The cars are way closer in performance now which is great. It means we can the maldonado's do well. Perhaps you would like the day of shummi again, round and round bore fest. Sadly not many good drivers get the good ride.

Not even you can read that into what he said without feeling a little melodramatic Killa. You can be the 'best' on the track and not win championships if your car isn't up to it, everyone knows that. Q is... did Alonso get better or Schumi get worse for Alonso's two championships... then did Alonso suddenly go off the boil again? Did Button suddenly go from a rubbish driver to a champion because of his effort? Was Redbull not the best car on the grid the past two seasons?

Most of the guys are talented drivers or why would they be picked to driver in f1?
That stands to reason and implies that in any given year, very often a car will shine. There are exceptions... the year Lewis won and the year Kimi won - they were so close that you couldn't call a car. Both those years were dominated by two cars though. Still MOSTLY down to the car.

Vettels redbull was the best car but not marks which clearly indicates the driver makes a big difference.

There are many super stars in f1 but for the first time since i started watching f1 there are about 6 or 7 cars capable of winning. I am talking raw one lap pace. Look at the quali's how close they have all been. 0.1 sec better could be the different between 4 and 12.

No doubt the tires are playing a role but for the very first time since i have been watching f1 there is no car that looks like it will dominate. there is no car that looks like it can handle every track and it's bloody marvelous. To suggest that pastor is not a capable driver who could win races in a good car is madness. He proved if he has the car he can grab pole and fight off a two time champion to win.

I agree about the cars - definitely more cars capable of winning races this year and it will be close as a result. I'm really stoked about the fact that no one car is dominating so far - it's exciting. Pastor proved he is capable given the right machine IMO. The real contenders will shine in their ability to adapt to these cursed tyres IMO. It's going to be challenging, but the fact is... there are SO MANY variables this year that it's going to take luck or somewhat of a master to win this year (or likely a bit of both).

Monaco woooooooooooooooooohoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

Let's hope for a surprise.

I'd like to see Lotus win, but I'm quietly hoping Maldonado & Williams pull another stunner. Dude is a fine street racer and that car is not half bad.

Yea i am hoping for someone to shine like perhaps hamilton, as much as i dislike him he really deserves a victory so i am routing for him this weekend :D but perez for me must win soon. Vettel should go well as well, a true racers circuit will show the good from the bad i think haha.
