Lap times are completely irrelevant, teams will be deliberately matching one another so as to not show their hand before they can actually get points for going fast. These days are 99.9% about making sure their simulations are correct, or updating where they are not.

edit: they are about 4 seconds off the pace from last year as an example, and iirc most teams reckon they should be within 1 second

I have a problem. I have always been a Ferrari guy, but the last few years when they were so bad, I supported Max, just for the sake of going up against Mrs Hamilton. And now I kind off like Max. But what if Ferrari is competitive this year?

It's fine, nobody cares who a fairweather supporter supports
@Icemanbrfc - now there's a dedicated supporter.

Ricciardo warns about Red Bull and Mercedes

Whilst McLaren and Ferrari have impressed so far in testing, Daniel Ricciardo believes that Red Bull and Mercedes have not yet shown their true performance.
The Australian will be back behind the wheel for this afternoon's session.

Verstappen goes faster

Verstappen is still at the top of the timesheets, and has now set a new fastest time of 1:19.765. That's just over a second ahead of Russell in second.
Norris remains in third, with Vettel fourth and Alonso in fifth.

Ted Kravitz on the all-white Haas car

"I can understand why they stopped their car looking like a Russian flag, it was the pragmatic decision. What I can't really understand is what is happening with the sponsor.

"Uralkali haven't been sanctioned yet as we know, and neither has Dmitri Mazepin has a person. And I haven't seen Ferrari yet take their Russian sponsor off their car as well. That raises questions to me over what is happening within this team - so that is a worrying sign."

Meanwhile, Nikita Mazepin has completed just five laps today - with Haas reconstructing their car after a leak.

A problem for Mazepin

Haas have confirmed that Mazepin's car has a suspected leak, meaning that the driver will be remaining in the garage for the time being whilst the crew look into it.
The team have had a quiet morning, with only nine laps on the board so far.

We are now halfway through this morning session, and Verstappen remains on top with that lap of 1:19.765.

Russell has improved in second to a 1:20.556, and Nicholas Latifi has appeared for Williams in third with a lap of 1:20.699.

I supported Williams since the age of 13 but got tired of them not performing of late, and started to support Vettel when he raced for Ferrari.
That carried across to AMR when he moved, and now I support both. Doesn't mean I don't have a "side chick" in the form of Williams and they'll always be there for me to cheer.

Just view things the same way!

Russell goes fastest

Russell goes to the top of the timesheets with a lap of 1:19.608, running the Soft compound.

Russell's lap pushes Verstappen to second He's a tenth clear of Verstappen now.

As well as being at the top of the timesheets, Russell has also put in more laps than anybody else so far today. The Mercedes driver has amassed 50 laps at last count.

Verstappen is next on 41, whilst Gasly has put in 39 laps and Norris is on 38.

Red flag

The session has been stopped for a second time. It appears to be Gasly who has stopped in sector two.

No news as of yet as to what caused Gasly's stoppage, but in the meantime the rest of the drivers are back in the pit lane.

Oh dear, back to the Vaal for you, Jean Claude Van Bandwagon.

Gasly went off track & hit barrier

Whether or not it was a technical issue that caused Gasly to lose control of his car is unclear, but we have now seen images showing that he hit the barrier.

That has caused the delay, as the marshals clear the debris and check the barriers.

AlphaTauri have confirmed that Gasly went off the track in the middle sector, but fortunately he is okay and back in the garage.

The session will begin again at 12:00 local time (11:00 GMT).
That will leave us with a full hour of action to take us through to the end of the session.

George Russell and Max Verstappen are separated by just over a tenth of a second currently at the top of timesheet.

Red flag

5 Min in and the session has been stopped again.

The red flag looks to be for Zhou, who appears to have stopped at sector three.

Hehehe... back to square one reliability wise. This is going to be one of those seasons. :sneaky:

And we're back

Green light, and the session is back in action for the final 40 minutes.
Norris has headed out on track, along with Verstappen, Vettel and Leclerc.

The stoppage was caused by an off for Guanyu Zhou.
He appears to have spun his Alfa Romeo at turn 10 - no obvious signs of a technical issue.

Russell fastest again

Russell beats his own fastest time at the top of the timesheets, the fastest time of the week with a lap of 1:19.233 on the Soft compound.
Meanwhile Vettel has set a personal best of 1:19.905, also on the Softs.

So even Seb is getting faster in the car. Good to see!
