Fair usage policies - Hosting Unlimited explains

Anything. There are a billion snazzy names out there. How about "The Dang Awesome Huge Hosting Package"?

The term everyone on this forum is looking for, is "unmetered". That means 24/7/365 max-out bandwidth, not restrained by an FUP. Most large ISPs sell it as a more expensive option than unlimited packages. It's not the hoster's fault their users don't understand the definition of "unlimited" even though they put together these long FUPs which describe exactly what "unlimited bandwidth" is.

It floors me that... after being ripped off for so many years in SA... some consumers are quite content to now be ripped off in another manner.

What ever happened to "Truth in Advertising"? What ever happened to ethics and honesty?

Just label the damn product accurately. If you do not intend on providing a completely unfettered unlimited service then don't use that name.

Leave it for those who intend to provide the service honestly.

4. That's what the FUP is. If they provide an FUP and then don't stick to it, it's only at that point you can call them out as liars.

Its peace of mind for the average user. I kind of like the package names small , medium and super size.... Drive through hosting.... If anyone from Hosting Unlimited is listening... On an another note there is a kind of appeal to Unlimited Web hosting.

Please show me one other country or link that shows an ISP outside of South Africa offering an unlimited/uncapped service where the FUP threatens to disconnect the user if he uses too much?

I don't see anyone in here arguing about the pricing or saying that the deal is too expensive. It's not... it is great. All we are asking for is a more accurate description. Because we know that if we allows the providers to start twisting the truth in this regard, they will take the ball and run with it... and you will have all kinds of false advertising. It's hard enough as it is to take these guys to the ASA and get them to be honest. Let's not make it easier for them. Uncapped = Unlimited = Unrestricted.

Search the web, pretty much all Unlimited Plans in the states threaten to disconnect and worse they threaten to do so without warning! I speak from experience. I just read Hosting Unlimited's Unlimited Policy they don't threaten to cut you off they seem to want to make a plan for users who are heavy duty.

No, when a said new forumite only joins to defend some new company then suspicion arises. Also when he/she defends a rather unpopular view then it draws the forumites intentions even further into question. We have had this very same argument MANY times before. Why didn't you see fit to join then and add your 2c's...?

See #4 - these guys happen to have a particulaly bad clause that gives them the right to cancel your account without proof or warning: "16.Utilize the Services in any other manner to interrupt or interfere with the Internet usage of other persons."

Currently i'm in mobile and Geospatial solutions, but I spent 10+ years in the ISP game when it was all beginning in za. Happy to be out of it. Mainly cos of the users. I think you can understand why "But I got an engaged tone when I dialled. What do you mean you have 20,000 subscribers but not 20,000 modems?!" ... this argument is the same crap, different subject matter.

Anyway.... seems like the users here have spoken. Nearly 80% find the use of the term unacceptable.

I for one will not be making use of ANY service which is dishonest in it's advertising or product descriptions.

Only a fool would continue to force such a description on users in the face of such overwhelming dislike for the terminology.

Not many ISPs anywhere in the world will say what the bandwidth abuse is, because it's such a fluid resource, with so many variables. These Hosting Unlimited guys do say exactly what their resource abuse policy is, though - it's on their side, hidden under "Resource Abuse Policy".

Then take Openweb out your tagline - are they still selling the uncapped express+ 384's as uncapped express+ 512 accounts? They did it for years. Joke of a company, really.

This isn't about that. It's about the ignorance of users. Same in pretty much every industry in the world. Most people don't understand the difference between warrantees/guarantees/motorplans on cars for example, and assume they're interchangeable. I don't feel it's the seller's obligation to clarify every single word they use. Ignorant buyers get shafted all the time, just remember: "if it seems to good to be true... it probably is" and you'll avoid a lot of disappointment in life.
