Free State farmers arrest 5 men for attempted murder, assault and robbery​


A group of Free State farmers made a citizen's arrest on Friday after five men allegedly tried to break into the Karkloof farm in the Verkykerskop area.

A 63-year-old was alone on the farm at the time, however, police did not provide further details about the person.

The men allegedly assaulted and robbed farmworkers, said police spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi Makhele.

The five suspects appeared in the Warden Magistrate's Court on Tuesday on charges of attempted murder, attempted residential burglary, robbery with a firearm and assault.

One of the guys who was arrested for killing Pieter and Eddie Hills, was previously released on parole after serving half his sentence because the social worker said he was reformed and regretted what he did.
 
Four killed in two separate farm attacks in KZN

A family of three and an 85-year-old man were killed in two separate farm attacks in KwaZulu-Natal in three days.

On Tuesday, the DA in the province said the murders took place in the midlands area.

“The incidents saw an 85-year-old Albert Falls farmer shot dead [on Saturday] and a family of three brutally killed near Bishopstowe [on Monday].

“These two heinous crimes are just the latest in what have been a terrible and tragic few months within KwaZulu-Natal's farming community. The DA in KwaZulu-Natal extends its deepest condolences to all families and communities affected by the ongoing violence within our rural areas,” said the party's agriculture and rural development spokesperson Chris Pappas.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Col Thembeka Mbele said the Debruin family were attacked on Monday after a labour dispute.

“It is alleged that two weeks ago there was a labour dispute between Daniel Debruin and his employees. Two of his workers were not pleased with their employer’s decision. The farm was closed and the employees were moved to a nearby informal settlement where they stay.

Farmhouse set on fire and a number of weapons stolen in Fort Beaufort

Fort Beaufort police responded to a call reporting an incident of housebreaking at 02:30 on Sunday and found the house engulfed in flames.

Cases of arson and housebreaking were opened after an unknown number of suspects broke into a farmhouse in Fort Beaufort in the Eastern Cape, stole firearms from the safe and set the house alight.
