fastest video transcoder

thanks, i tried compressor - it's actually much slower then any of the other apps mentioned in this thread - i did the multicore tweak and it gave a slight boost - i'm a little confused as to why i'm not getting any significant performance increase over my old xp box.

just tried video monkey - couldn't really get it to work... did you manage? I think a lot of features aren't enabled yet.

Must confess I've never tried Video Monkey. I only read about it last night. I've always used Visualhub as it was the simplest to use with the most options. Never worried about speed as I wasnt expecting too much from my 2.0Ghz Core Duo Macbook Pro!

On the subject of encoding and such, is there a tool to join .avi files for the mac, dont want to use Visualhub cause it re-encodes the avi's.

I use D-Vision for this.

I'm suprised it's slow for you. It's pretty fast for me.

What settings are you using?
2 pass encoding?
running in 1080P resolution?
Not using Motion Adaptive deinterlacing?
Not changing the frame rate?

thanks for the links, there is every chance the slowness of compressor is due to user error - will play around a bit more and see what kind of results i get.

generally i'll be compressing a motionjpeg qt @720x576 down to 320x240 h264 just for a reference picture - i keep the framerate and audio rate the same, so it has to do some resizing and codec transcoding. but at the moment i have other problems (see post about odorous mac!)

Handbrake is still the best.

Quicktime Pro and Compressor have poor performance compared to it.

i find handbrake is unreliable, sometime audio is out of sync or aspect ratios are off, it's got for dvd ripping but transcoding isn't it's strong point.
