I just skimmed through that site (got my info from Nat geo "Drugs inc" and then a bit of googling on the subject both now and when I was younger and did in fact try things like extractions).

Anyway, we are in South Africa, you can buy Edited due to current topic with codeine at most shops (even some supermarkets) over the counter, no questions asked and that is what our local full blown addicts use.

You have been duped, by bigfarm, by the local chemist that does not ask for a prescription, by that first and all those subsequent doctors that prescribed this poison to you and by every other person that ever gave you this stuff without explaining fully and properly how dangerous it is.

Oh and if you go to them you can expect them to either give you different drugs or to institutionalise you (keep the cash in the family just like any good nigie would do). If you run out of cash they will make a plan for you as well so that you can pay later...

Oh . Local chemist be Farked. They do enough nannying as it is. Name address and a cat travel cage for a packet of coedine tablets? It's a complete and utter waste of time. All they do is count pills and dispense. Robots can do that. The process could be automated in places like clicks. It can't be done fast enough to put some of these old fools out of business. I've seen enough pharmacists on power trips but still there's some good Apples out there that save you a fortune in Doctors fees. Clicks is not one of them though.

I must say at the height of my "addiction" I had about 5 pharmacies that I used to frequent in order to get my yellow demons.

Out of all of them the only one that ever denied me was Clicks Pharmacy. The pharmacist literally threw me out of the shop after he pulled up my record and saw how much I had purchased in a month period.

I was extremely p#ssed but it did hit me as to what I was doing and what damage I was doing to my body.

Eish, doctors like that should not be allowed to practice. It's something that should be reported to the medical board but first let's deal with your problem. You should find out why you are getting the headaches. Without doing that you are just heading off a cliff no matter what you do. A clinic isn't going to help and any doctor that just wants to book you in should be [too graphic to describe here]. These money making rackets just want to send you on your way again after taking your cash. In fairness they probably expect you to be doing the rest but they know the system is set up in a way that milks rather than helps. Cue RiaX saying there's no conspiracy.

Addiction is not your primary problem and if you can stop taking them on your own then you don't even have an addiction. From experience Codeine is piss poor for relieving headaches which would lead you to addiction eventually. Get something like Ibuprofen instead but for the long term you should really try the magnesium route.

Not your Drs not your pharmacists not your husband not your dog not your tree growing behind the house ... YOU.

you probably wouldve entered a stage where you would take 4 - 8 codeine containing OTC painkillers at a time why? no one said you must do this. Its like a smoker blaming the cigarette company for smoking they just make the cigs you the one smoking it.

They didnt tell you because they didnt want you to run away and they didnt want you to have time to stash some drugs in your underwear drawer and so forth. Anyways damage done

Opioid dependance is dangerous and varies to certain degrees. Obviously you shouldnt be in such a bad state as a heroin addict but you flying first class on the same plane. Its dangerous it needs to medically managed and titrated either go for the treatment and help do it right do it honestly and do it safely or stay addicted - dont waste your time with self pity and dont expect sympathy if you not willing to do what needs to be done.

JHB I feel for you, how you were treated, that's pretty shocking, especially for something as weak as codeine. Codeine is a weak opiod and withdrawal shouldn't be too bad at all. Try using immodium (in the states some call it OTC methodone). It will help ease your physical withdrawal (if you still have any that is) the rest is (mainly) psychological.

Take something non addictive but effective for your headaches instead. The Adco-dol was likely making them worse and more frequent in the long run.

Here's a video on how to stop opiod withdrawal with OTC items. Take the video with a pinch of salt for a weak opiod like codeine. I'm sure you'll be fine with some good food, vitamins and some damn TLC!

I've come off high doses of Oxycodone with OTC aids for periods of time and it really isn't that bad at all - a bad case of flu at the most. But I'm not an addict, I stick to the dose and don't abuse my meds.

A hospital Dr once told me that codeine was a swear word with him lol. It's really despised by some Dr's.

I have an issue with using codeine medicine for headaches and migraines and it has somewhat spiraled out of control and now I get headaches just as a result of not taking 12 or so headache pills a day. I've had a headache since Sunday and yesterday the dr gave me a migraine injection but the pain returned a few hours later.

My husband went to see our dr this morning on his own to ask what we can do about the codeine thing and the dr said we have to go to a certain Life Health care hospital for a consultation. So we arrived there and they wanted to practically lock me up. Started admitting me, wanting to take my cellphone etc etc. I didn't even have a bag packed and my husband really had to fight with them to cancel the admittance. They only let you see a dr when you are a patient there it seems. My husband called our GP to find out what the heck is going on and the GP admitted he wrote an admittance script thing and didn't tell him because I would not have gone otherwise.

So now I am back at home without the help I need because they sprung this all on me so suddenly and treated me like a heroin addict. The sad part is I probably would have gone had I had some time to get use to the idea and restrictions. Also the med aid only pays 70% if you don't have a prior 72 hour agreement from them. So financially we would have also have been raped pfft.

This story does not sound right. Isn't it unethical for a doctor to do such a sneaky thing?

Are you sure it's not your husband trying to get you admitted so that you can get the help you need? In which case I would think that your husband cares a great deal but it is very unfair to blame it on the doctor.

As it should be. These low dose formulations are typically available fairly readily, but we should be making higher dosages more easily obtainable. Tough luck for people who can't control themselves.

If it's S3 or lower they don't have to ask for a prescription. For S3 they can, but it is up to their discretion. Furthermore people should stop whining about doctors and pharmacists, since they're not the ones who fail to read medication inserts or ask questions or keep escalating the dose. Look at what is in your medication and if you don't know what it is then ask.

I've had some issues with Clicks' pharmacists, but they do have many good ones. I maintain I should not have to pay a doctor to get effective pain medication. Nor do I need someone deciding for me that my pain level isn't adequate to justify a medication that actually works.

I avoid clicks when I can possibly help it because while they don't ask for a prescription for schedule 2 they make a bloody nuisance of themselves and harp on about how its the law that they must have your name and address when all you require is a box of headache/tootache/period/backache/ painkillers and without exception they waste 5 minutes or more depending on the level of literacy data capturing when if it's the law, why the remaining 99.9% of pharmacies don't bother. I suspect the marketing of clicks club cards has more to do with this capturing of information.

Absolutely spot on there. I mentioned in an earlier thread now buried that the level of effective pain control training the doctors get in this country is pretty appalling, but not nearly as bad as the US and the UK where the GP is more worried about losing his license for overprescription than pallative care. Some pharmacists are pretty knowledgable though, but they are few and far between. Most do what a cheap chinese robotic arm could do at a quarter the price.
