Fiancee is preggers

Yes it does.

Only if the father acknowledges paternity in-front of a Home Affairs official will the child be registered with his surname. But I get your point :)

He wasn't even around when the baby was registered so he couldn't have been in front of a home affairs official, and the child still got his surname, the father can fight it if he wishes, but yeah you could put down anything as the child surnames, I've seen it where the drugged up parent put the surname incorrectly and bam the child is registered as that :-).

IN this country anything is possible!

Here's what the law says:
Children born out of wedlock are registered under the surname of the mother. They may also be registered under the surname of their biological father provided that the father acknowledges paternity and both the father and the mother consent to the registration of the child under the father’s surname in the presence of a Home Affairs official.

Ah okay so that's how is supposed to be :-) but not seen it in practice but I guess that's how it goes sometimes.

but enjoy it OP!:D

Child 1-6 Months currently

2x Pampers Nappies Bulk Box (150 nappies box) @ R290 each so R580 (older they get less nappies they use)
2x 1.8Kg NaN @ R200 each so R400 (If mother decides not to breastfeed)
3x Wetwipes @ R30 each so R90
1x Electricity @ R100 (if you pay for electricity - kettle gets boiled a lot!)

R1170 a month basic costs for a child under 6 months. As you can see you can save quite a bit if the child is breastfed and cloth washable nappies are used.

Not trying to be a douche or anything, but am I the only one who would have suscpicious thoughts if my SO got knocked up if I knew we always used protection, I mean unless the condom broke what are the chances of getting pregnant?

Something to think about!

The term 'knocked up' , IMO, is such an unflattering/derogatory/insulting term and I would certainly never want to announce a pregnancy that way.

Again, JMO!

Hmm I never thought it is that bad? Each to their own I guess.

Na my girl is very faithful !! Look, I would be lying if I said we ALWAYS use condoms, but it is far and few between that we dont, and usually just before or after that time of the month. Regardless, it has happened. I know the baby is mine. :)
One of the reasons I love her is that I can actually trust her.

I cannot wait to see what he/she looks like. Going to be very strange seeing a little version of your face staring back at you :D

BTW Reiku_San I was in the same position as you. Been together with fiancee for 6 years now and have a 1 year 8 month old baby in a very low paying job. Thats all changed changed though.

Get as much sleep now, those afternoon naps are history for the next couple years.
As for cost of the kid, most of that comes from nappies, there are nappies you can wash in the washing machine, will save you tons of cash.
Food wise, it can be pricey, purity is pricey but you'll be fine.
When the kid develops a personality it's the best, they become a little person you can relate to.

Well I think this will be a problem for me. I cannot sleep during the day unless I am very ill - too much noise, light, etc etc. I am a very light sleeper (causing my mother huge hassles as a baby) and i generally wake several times a night. I do need at least 7 hours otherwise I am a massive grump. My lady however sleeps like the dead. Guess who will be tending to baby at 2am :/

You can save a lot more if just allow the child to do its business like a wild animal on the floor or wherever - costs = R0
Breast milk = R0
Water (use your free basic monthly allocation, can't be more) = R0
Wetwipes? wtf wipe with piece of cloth rinse(in above mentioned water) and repeat = R0

Total cost R0 atleast for the first year. All this used to be standard practice back it the day so its tried and tested. If you need to take a bath wash the baby first then reuse that water for your bath.

Then

PROFIT!!

From my experience that is a very watered down "shopping list":

Don't forget the initial setup costs with a pram, kot, bottles, dummies, steamer, humidifier, clothing, blankets, towels...the list is endless. If your medical does not cover everything, their are some serious gynea bills on it's way as well with all the scans and checkups. The birth cost quite a bit as well.

The sums for the basic costs do make sense, but does not allow for all those pediatric visits during the first 6 mnths at usually R650 a visit. If the kid is sick, your rarely get away under a R1000 for doc and medication.

Then also add wet wipes, baby oil, baby powder, baby shampoo and soap and Bio-Oil and Bepanthen ( R185 for 200 ml tube).
This list is also endless.
So budget at least R4000 per month AND budget for an increase in Med Aid. Also bear in mind that UIF does not pay much when wife is on mat. leave.

We planned and saved and still kakked.

LOL or even easier give up for adoption or be adamant its not yours!

.

You can avoid Pampers with very little effort, save the expense and do a lot for the environment.
We raised three kids with 3 doz towel nappies and Johnson nappy liners.
Plus Fison paste, a truly magic muti.
After drying on the line the nappies had to be washed because of a nasty little bug called putzi fly but that won't affect you.
When our kids outgrew the nappies we gave them to her sister (the nappies that is) although she ruined them with a tumble dryer.
