Fibre and power in same conduit

I was wondering if in South Africa there are any code against running fibre and electrical wire in the same conduit? Will the installers run the fibre in the same conduit when they come install?

Vuma is busy in our area and I had them put my connection box against a boundry wall pillar that has conduit into my home, however, this conduit is currently occupied by 1 x 3core house wire to power the lights on the boundry wall, it is a standard 20mm pvc conduit so there are still some space left for a wire or two.

Google only delivers results from Australia where there seems to be a rule against it if the fibre cable contains any metallic protection inside the cable.

Electrical cable, and telecommunication, radio, and/or signalling circuits can not be run in the same wire way (i.e. conduit) as electrical cables.

A cable shall not be run
a) in the same trench or wireway as a supplier's cable, except with the supplier's permission,
b) in the same wireway as the cables or wires of telecommunication, radio and signalling circuits that are not covered by this part of SANS 10142,
c) where it is likely to be damaged by liquids such as oil, acid, acetone and alkali or by gases such as sulfur dioxide,
d) within 150 mm of hot services such as hot pipes and flues if the heat is likely to damage the cable, unless the cable is cooled or shielded from heat, or
e) in a position where it is likely to be damaged, unless it is mechanically protected.

From SANS10142, South African National Standards - The Wiring of premises.

OK, sucks. Then again I do not think there is any harm that can be caused to do it? I mean there should not be interference between fibre optics and power right?

Does that count for non conductive cable though?

It's bad, but won't do any harm.

Won't cause any harm no, but you'll have an immediate COC failure if you ever want to sell your property.

OK thanks everyone. I bought the place a year ago and do not have plans to sell soon. Also if it comes to selling I will just disconnect the fibre, or the boundry lights as that is how I got it when I purchased the place.

Ironically I enquired about it and they said as longs as it is disconnected it does not fall under the COC, which I find a bit unbelievable.

How old is that?

I would agree with that type of code if it was copper/conductive, but pure plastic/fibre?? o_O
