Don't get your hopes up... it may be 2-3 weeks for your complex to be ready, but until they light the area, you're gonna have to wait!

Fibre has been run up to my gate. Today they will be running from there to the built in Telkom box on my garage wall and then doing the connection plug inside.

The next thing I will need to find out is whether I have to use TITC SA for my fibre or if I can choose someone else. They have also given an estimated date of early June so that is possibly the switch on time for all of us?

I really hoped we would have had more traction by now because initially the go live date was 1 May. but alas. the wait continues. Anyone else had more luck?

Fibrehoods are finishing up in our complex... so next step would be for Vumatel to do the individual unit installs, not sure if they will do so when Fibrehoods are done, or when the area Fibre is "lit"

- Been told that we should be up by the end of May, early June - should there be no delays.

'Finishing up' as in the grey boxes have been installed outside each unit?

If so, the next step, the installation to each unit, will only be done once each unit signs up with an ISP or directly with Vumatel for installation.

Find out who's the Vumatel Sales rep for your complex, they can fast track your installation.

only limited ISP's on the network are allowed at the moment, non with free install
installation is R1700 plus R800 activation fee
here is the list sent to me via vumatel

Not sure i follow, Initio offers free installation with R999 connection fee. Free installation is pulling the fibre from outside the complex and connect each unit with an ont. Mahala. then if you want to start using their services you have to fork out R999 for connection fee.

Is this about the same for everyone else going live on MFN? obviously connection fee differs per ISP i would think.

So far, grey box outside the first unit of each row in the complex, and the fibre running up to the wall of each unit.

We have already provided our details to Vumatel (of those who want fibre)... so the wait continues.

Vumatel have kind of locked out the process, so that they make some money... If you want fibre through Vumatel, you pay them a R1710 once off fee to run the fibre into your unit.

You then select a ISP to get connectivity, some of them have a connection fee, some do not.

Initio only charges you R999 for connection, but then abuses you with their money rates!

We can never win, but these guys need to make some return for the work they do i guess.

Apparently Fibrehoods are handing over our complex to Vumatel on friday... the core network and stability test have been completed.

No to wait for unit installation and successful testing, before cancelling Telkom

How long did the Fibrehoods contractor take for the complex installation? How many units?
Anything specific that went wrong/well that you would advise for/against?
Please keep us posted on the progress.

signed initial contract with them around middle of Feb, completion middle May... so 3 months (this includes the actual fibre along the street poles along our road / area) ... just short of 60 units in the complex

They attempted to cut corners by not following the agreed means of installation, so simply keep an eye on what they are doing and raise any concerns sooner rather than later (after a meeting with them, then fixed the issue)

Next step is for Vumatel to complete individual unit installation.

Thanks. Do you know who was the contractor that was assigned the complex installation by Fribrehoods?

Seems that using existing conduits and trenched paths where Telkom lines are already running is not that easy and generally advised against.

Apparently, the fibre runs in a loop, so it doesn't follow the same logic as a Telkom distribution box with a single copper line running to each unit. The fibre has to run to a CTP and back again to continue the loop until it is terminated at the end of the line.
Many/most of the complex proposals seem to be based on a loop/line running around/through the complex/estate with breakout loops either directly to CTPs or first to a splitter and then a few CTPs focused around a splitter.

One CTP can feed a few units depending on the setup, but the final indoor termination box (CPE) can apparently not be further than 30m from the CTP, so this complicates matters a bit.

This is my very limited understanding of how it works, so those that have had different methods of installation, please do mention. Good to be as informed as possible about any alternatives/pitfalls once we head down this path.

So we have an ETA of live mid June. I'm selected my package of 25/25 (unshaped, uncapped) @ R899.

So holding thumbs

My understanding is that the 'fibre loop' is almost complete and they will start on each complex first come first serve.

Is that correct?
