the government subsidies every school per child, you actually "dont" have to pay for school unless its a private school.

Okay maybe in your day in my day we had to pay school fees :D, however Nika is claiming that 40% of kids have free education, surely that should be 100% then?

EDIT: Since everyone is equal in SA? Sure if you go to private school obviously you'll pay but you do get a higher level of education at private schools imo

yes it should be. as far as I know no school my refuse a child education it doesn't matter in what suburb or whatever, Every school gets the same amount of subsidies from the government, even the snobbish once get the same as the local ones. and yes I am sure in your time they got subsidies as well. Not paying school fees then wasn't unacceptable though now its becoming the norm.

possibly, although I did see any difference to be honest between students who took a A level exam and a governmental exam at university, we are more or less on the same level.
Tiny differences here and there and I do know that Crawford College ( a private school) for example in pta shared the same curriculum with the governmental schools. This was the case with the school I went to we often traded projects etc.

The government is in particular targeting education for the poorest of the poor, with two notable programmes. One is fee-free schools, institutions that receive all their required funding from the state and so do not have to charge school fees. These have been carefully identified in the country's most poverty-stricken areas, and will make up 40% of all schools in 2007.

I wrote that article.
and yes I am sure in your time they got subsidies as well.
Yes they did. I'm not sure what Retrobok's time was, but at the height of Bantu education, white schools received subsidies that were hundreds of times higher than black schools (per scholar).
I would love to know the exact total per child these schools are getting its probably not even enough to cover half the costs,
Probably not. It's certainly much more than all schools received in the past.

Awesomeness....if you don't mind me asking whee did you source the facts from? I'm not disputing them..obviously otherwise I wouldn't have used them to back up my point :D

I'm not disputing the fact tha "bantu" education was malnourished, I'm disputing the claim that the ANC had nothing to work with, the infrastructure was there to be built on...

Another point is although we may have had decent subidies etc, our parents also had to work hard to raise money for the school we went to ie: Fun days, flea markets, etc etc held at the school, thats how we manged o get a school bus and all those nice other perks.

For interest sakes I went to school from 1981-1992

No it definately isn't, however a lot more can be done for education as we all know, and IMO instead of subsidising 40% of scholars they should rather charge all scholars the same (which would decrease the fees that are currently paid by the other 60%"), that way no one can bitch. Sure if you choose to go to a private school then that's a different matter.

I think the state can contribute a lot more to financially supporting students though, the current bursary systems is not working.

Yes imagine what they could have achieved instead of spending billions on arms...SA would have an "armed" population in a totally differn sense of the word.

Why would they do that? They are already giving out free bursaries and university education to the "underprivileged".

what they don't realize is that the-so-called privileged cant afford it either way, how many people on this forum for example had to work part time to pay for their studies or study with a loan etc? We are all in the same boat, the government fails to see this.

So true, a few weeks ago I was listening to a talk they had on a radio station. According to them different races has different minimum requirements for university exemption. Now, how is that fair at all? Why do you as a "white" person need 85% as opposed to a "black" person's 50% to qualify? *I am not sure what the exact figures were, looking them up on the internet.*, but I remember it was a huge difference.

The same was true with bursaries. I had to pass all my subjects and get something like 70%+, while my previously disadvantaged comrades could fail some subjects and only needed 60%+ to be considered for bursaries.

this is kinda obvious, their level of education and level of resources is much lower then ours, and with regards to universities, not many of them will point you away if you go over the minimum requirements mark for 90% of the faculties.

I'm sorry this is where I get ansy...

I'm all for helping out the previously disadvantaged etc etc, really I am, but if someone "of colour" has gone through the current school system ie: after 1994 their university entrance qualifications should be the same as for a person who is white and gone through the same system.

Where this should differ is if a person "of colour" finished school previous to 1994 then his university entrance qualifications should be ammended. I'm probably going to feel the wrath of other peoples opinions here.

What you're going to get is a white population who is increasingly frustrated and not as educated as they could be, and other populations getting into university and struggling and then dropping out because they actually weren't educationally qualified for the course, which also leads to frustration and not as eucated as they could be.

And on the whole eventually you're going to have a total population with a sub standard level of education and a bigger population of people who cannot get jobs, which will increase the weight on the state for social welfar, not to mention an increase in crime...

Entrance should be on merit and not skin colour... Apartheid in reverse...

I'm sure there will be a few people who do not agree with me here.

this is where the racist acts of BEE and employment equaity comes into play, the government wants a certain % of candidates who pass to be black, racist yes but that is the reason why bursaries and tertiary institutions drop their requirements, although I will find it hard to believe that they drop their standard of education.

But dude that's the thing, surely their level of education should be the same. After all it's the ANC in charge of these things now??? (They who have the previously oppressed interests at heart) So there shouldn't be that difference. Obviously there must be, so the governement is ****ing everyone over.... Time to get out there and start opening peoples eyes!

I have no idea about how education was in your time, but I assure you, you have to be a complete idiots to not meet minimum requirements for universities, I didn't open a book and got 70+ for all. my subjects. Honestly If you didn't get into a uni, you don't deserve to be there. As for the Medical faculty they have a weird system of allocating students, some of them hardly got the 90% marks ( white people) and got in and others didn't. I have no idea how they work =)

The ANC is to blame yes, they don't have the resources though, but like I said most of my family didn't even get a standard 8 so the argument of having support isn't really valid.

Moderating marks upwards is even worse.

I doubt this is true?

What could be true is that the Universities have quotas for the different race groups and the white race being the minority with the coloured people and others will face tough scrutiny to gain acceptance if their is an over subscription to a particular course, meaning that only the top students will be chosen from the smaller race group and the average mark is likely a lot higher as in the case you mention of 85%.

What is not told is the practice of moderating school marks (in the sense of Tertiary education acceptance) and how this might actually not be in the students best interests bringing false hopes to an unworthy student and dashing the hopes of another.
Let's say the average Matric mark for a specific School that has done very poorly in Matric is 30%. The Department takes these marks and brings up the average by 20% to 50%. This means that a student who actually only obtained a mark of 30% has now technically got a University Exemption and this person is competing with a different student who might have an actual 50% mark all trying to enter the same Tertiary institution. The chances then are that the 30% student might just be wasting their time and tax payers money and an opportunity for a kid who really got 50% is dashed and their career path might be compromised as a result.
I bet the Universities are aware of this practice and perhaps on the quiet act accordingly. I really don't know, but would assume as much.
