What could be true is that the Universities have quotas for the different race groups and the white race being the minority with the coloured people and others will face tough scrutiny to gain acceptance if their is an over subscription to a particular course, meaning that only the top students will be chosen from the smaller race group and the average mark is likely a lot higher as in the case you mention of 85%.

What is not told is the practice of moderating school marks (in the sense of Tertiary education acceptance) and how this might actually not be in the students best interests bringing false hopes to an unworthy student and dashing the hopes of another.
Let's say the average Matric mark for a specific School that has done very poorly in Matric is 30%. The Department takes these marks and brings up the average by 20% to 50%. This means that a student who actually only obtained a mark of 30% has now technically got a University Exemption and this person is competing with a different student who might have an actual 50% mark all trying to enter the same Tertiary institution. The chances then are that the 30% student might just be wasting their time and tax payers money and an opportunity for a kid who really got 50% is dashed and their career path might be compromised as a result.
I bet the Universities are aware of this practice and perhaps on the quiet act accordingly. I really don't know, but would assume as much.

the department have always done this.most of us Engineering students were encourage to take the university's test for to help us decide between 4 and 5 year programs.
 
The level of intelligence in this thread is astounding. Clearly the ANC need to improve the standard of education.
 
The UCT Medical School is extremely tough in terms of admissions. While it welcomes a wide variety of students, it is possible, that a student with lower grades is accepted as they consider a whole range of factors e.g. community service, recommendations and IMO seems to be similar to what some of the top US schools do in terms of admission.

Indeed. Free schooling is of little use if the quality of education is low.
What is disturbing is that despite the fiddling with numbers, or maybe because of it, the standard of education is lagging behind other countries with fewer resources than SA.

I have exemption,I did not get 85%.
Perhaps you should back up your claims with facts and not hearsay.
 
My son has just been accepted into Stellenbosch for next year with a Grade 11, 65% pass mark.:)

Mom and Dad are very proud. :)

Yeah rest asured many times the teachers are paying for material out of their own pockets.

Can't emagine how they would be able to subsidise schoolchildren in the Ghettos. Who can't afford food or clothes but they have free education.

I laugh at this. The ANC are still going to do what they want (without the 2/3 majority), like they did the last 15 years. They are going to keep heading SA into decline.

Now that is quite silly to say. The ANC do not have the power they have had for the past 5 years to change laws without anyone else's say. So no they can't do whatever they want.

OMG.Do you know how democracy works?If you are certain of your statement then it's you versus the rest of the world.Why would other countries want to trade,build businesses and invest in a country thats government is criminal?Yes there are criminals in the government but not the whole lot of them and to say our democracy is a farce is to say all democracy is a farce.
