Firefox usage

Agreed there is money to be made exploiting flaws but it's a double edged sword, if Firefox held the majority market share then hackers would target it. Also how do you get millions of people to keep their Firefox up to date when flaws are found (and they will be)?

IE was being developed at a time when the buzzword was "features" not "security". Sure this has come back to haunt MS but at least they are releasing patches to address the issues and from a user standpoint one can't really argue with that.

You don't need 24/7 connectivity for Windows Update to work well. The only issue I've had is when it was trying to download SP 2 (I'm on ISDN 64k). Other than that my updates have downloaded without me even noticing until it's popped up telling me it's ready to install, it really is painless.

I don't think MS have a grand strategy to thumb their nose at W3C standards, they just wanted to provide features that were not standard at the time IE was created. Besides there is no law that one has to concretely adhere to the standards. It may not be "playing nice" but then there are MANY companies that don't play nice, MS is just the favourite scapegoat.

I have absolutely no problem with MS keeping their code closed to the general public. They do make their source code available to government institutions where security is mission critical. As a software developer myself I wouldn't want everyone having access to my code else what am I working for if anyone can just copy it? I have no problem contributing to open source projects but it is obviously voluntary.

Before you call me an MS fanboy I'm just arguing the other side of the coin. I like Linux but work mostly on Windows. I like FireFox but prefer Avant. People are far too quick to abuse MS when they step out of line but anything open source can do no wrong. Logic like that should stay in the school yard.

At the end of the day you're not forced to use IE so there is no point continually abusing it and evangilising Firefox, let people try both and decide for themselves.

MS does have security savvy people though it's taken them a while to catch a wakeup ;) Longhorn would have happened regardless but obviously now that the market demands tight security MS are pimping it as a major "feature" (gotta love those marketing guys). Guess we'll have to wait and see if they deliver in a couple of years time.

I also design my projects from the ground up with security in mind however for me it's a pain in the ass. I don't skimp on security but it takes time away from playing with the fun stuff :D

Firefox vs Microsoft IE

19 years old vs Software giant ( founded by 19 years old)

Youth seems to be a definite advantage on the Net !

Black Ross is only 19 ,(was only 17 when he started developing Firefox !)

So ,How many 19 years old members here ?

My firefox is so pimped right now!

It totally dominates Maxthon once you customise it. IE?? Who the fsck used IE anyway?
U need stuff like, prgooglebar, tab browser preferences, adblock, gmail notifier, MiniT+, session saver, tab clicking options, flashgot, mile wide back.

Then you will truly own. :) (haha I'm such a FF fanboy)

I like the tabbed browsing. After starting to use Firefox, IE irritates my by opening links in new windows instead of new tabs.

There's a tab extension available which is very cool :D

Yup, firefox definitely kicks some serious butt. Seems a lot of people are starting to see the light now.

I have one big complaint about Mozilla. If the program is left dormant for some time, it goes into some kind of a coma, and takes ages to wake up ...

Anyone experiencing the same?

An interesting thing happened today. Got home and couldn't find firefox as a shorcut. Looked in the start/programs and nothing. Looked in the directory and the application file had disappeared.

Checked to see if I someone had accessed my computer. Couldn't see anything.

Thats weird. Anyone experience this. Maybe I have been hacked.

Beyers,
I have found that vanilla Firefox is pretty speedy, but some extensions seem to bloat it and slow it down. I have found that the Acrobat Reader browser helper also turns firefox into mush....but then again Adobe software always hogs resources.

I have now removed quite a few of the extensions that I tried out and didn't really need, and FiFo is flying again.

Hi there!

No problem with FiFo here? Use it at home and work now and it is eons better than IE. I don't run a lot of extensions though. I do have FLASH and the like installed as far as plug ins go.

I should actually try and see if I can push it to the limit.

Cheers
Ant

I'm slowly encouraging non Tech savvy people to switch, but it's an uphill battle.

The first thing you have to get them to understand is that firefox is an internet browser for accessing the WWW.

8 times out of 10 that leaves a blank expression, so trying another tac :-
Firefox is just like Internet Explorer

Which is usually replied by "then why do I need to change ?"

At this stage, my infinite patience pays off :-

Me: "You know all those pop-up windows that keep appearing and all the viruses and nasties going around ?"
User: "Yes"
Me: "Well, with firefox, you won't get those"

That tends to do the trick, even if it is a partial lie :D

I'm hooked! Firefox RULES! I get SO agitated with IE 'cos I keep middle-clicking to open new tabs... and nothing happens! :)

Why do I still use IE, you may ask: Because the company that I work for's main product (for which I do coding) only works on IE... VBScript... bljech! :P

Maybe it's time we update it to use JavaScript?

*shrug*

IE has become nothing more than a nuisance on my PC for me. I wish I could remove it entirely from my PC. The second I started using Firefox I didn't look back.

Firefox has definatly made the internet easier to browse and alot safer with special attention to security and bug-fixes. How did we ever manage to browse the internet without tabs or pop-up blocking?

Something else I have become to love in Firefox is the mouse gestures extension. Definatly worth a try, and once you learn all of them browsing becomes ever easier with gestures like having to just hold r-click and move mouse up and release buttun to open a new tab and hold r-click and move mouse left or right and release to go back or forward ! You can even open multiple links each in its own tab with a single mouse movement!

Sorry, I just love it!

One further little problem I experience with FF is very specific: If I copy an array of numbers in FF, e.g. currencies from www.xe.com, and paste it in Excell, it pastes all in one cell ... totally useless.

When you copy in IE, it pastes correctly each number in its own cell. This forces me to use IE still occasionally.
