Fireplace advice

Any good fireplace installers in CPT, that are willing to install a unit not purchased from them (if I do decide to go the Bosca Firepoint route...)?

Please explain more about stainless steel flue/cowl?

I have a closed wood burning fireplace in our entrance area which should heat kitchen ,.entrance and lounge and that damn thing only seems to heat the entrance area.

I know heat is distributed via the flue/chimney and was thinking to install a small fan to move the heat around.

In fact, was planning to move it to our lounge since it seems to inefficient .. or to dump it and replace with gas. Hauling wood is such a pain in the arse.

Hauling fuel is a pain regardless of whether it is wood, coal, or gas.
Heat distribution is severely affected by the predominant air flows in your home. Need to establish how air moves through your house, driven by drafts, open windows, predominant wind directions etc. Then once you know that find the right place to install the unit. Or, deliberately change the airflow pattern to suit where you want the unit to be.

I spent Friday driving around to a few fireplace showrooms in CPT.

So far it's looking like I'll go with a Godin Concerto (10 kw)

I would have thought the fireplace guys would have been more flexible on price, given that it's end of season - but most seem to be playing hard to get. I may just wait for summer to see if they price drop...

I was chatting to a supplier who had a cast iron one. He was complaining that the heat from his had burst the wall behind our with all the heating and cooling.

Be careful how it is installed. Ours has cladding and insulation that means you can touch the lower sides and back while using it. It also channels air up past the burner box to act as a convection stove.

Yep -With my research on the subject, I've seen a few very expensive units let down by cheap installations.

They place the unit too close to the wall (15cm / 20cm) as opposed to the 40-50cm it should be - as a result the paint peels / cracks and the wall gets damaged.

The installers I've been speaking to (various) seems to agree that cast iron should be 40cm+ from your back wall, 60cm left open on the sides of the unit and 80cm left open in front of the unit.

Location is very crucial and you need to place it somewhere where the heat can distribute throughout the house. Mine was moved from the corner of the house to now nearly the center of my house. Much better.

The stainless steel chimney pipe that comes out of the fireplace / stove will radiate heat but I still find the most heat comes from the actual fireplace. Putting it away from the wall is essential to allow for better heat flow. I need to still install tiles behind mine to radiate the heat away from the wall. I've not had a problem with cracks or anything.

I've found with better airflow that my fireplace heats up the house much nicer, actually the house is cooler but it is more pleasant. I guess having it in the corner we would overfire the crap out of it to heat up the whole house resulting in too much heat. The old problem of people thinking that if they put an aircon at 10C it will cool down quicker than leaving it at 23C.

R17 995 for the unit and +-R10 000 for installation (flue + cowl + floor plate + installation). So about R28 000 all in.

Just a tip - I got a quote for a stainless steel braai as well as associated installation (also R10k) . I just asked if they delivered or could my contractor pick it up. R3000 dropped off installation cost in the blink of an eye...

Thanks - always worth haggling a bit ;)

Cool. I didn't even haggle per se - just dropped a comment in email as to whether they delivered or my contractor needed to pick it up :).

Edit: I didn't have a contractor lined up....

Why would they drop the price that much though?

The perceived threat was enough for them to realise that you are on to them heh heh!
BTW, who manufactures the SS braai?
