First DSTV HD channel

better late than never I guess?

o yay another sports channel. i am sure there are people that actually watch sport but i am not one of them. now if only that encoding wasn't so tough.....

I actually enjoy the sport channels! Any idea on the price of the HD decoders?

Unless they launch HD channels that are not sport, I'm sticking to the ol PVR

Would help if they launched an HDTV decoder at the same time, but i doubt that will happen since they're talking that the HD decoder will be released in about 2 or 3 weeks, and somehow I don't see that happening.

Will this be in 720P format as previously stated or 1080i/P format as mentioned in the advertising format?

sweet...this is good news. I recently acquired a nice big HD LCD TV so I will definitely buy the new HD PVR.

seems like people need to upgrade their decoders as much as their pc's...thats seriously wrong.

har har har... Don't need a TV :) ....least DSTV

"In order for you to actually use this technology that the rest of the world has been aware of for the last three years, you are going to need to give us EVEN. MORE. MONEY!"

Screw these idiots, I just got a PVR last year and now they want me to pay for another one simply because they are incapable of future-proofing their stuff? Unless they offer some sort of trade-in or something, they won't see a single cent from me.

If it weren't the Olympics, which I actually watch, I'd scream at the fact that its yet another sports channel.

I read on the DSTV forums (and I see it says so in the article too) that the Olympic HD channel will be replaced with an M-net type channel after the olympics.

720P

IMO, screw DSTV. Only sport channels? Lame

Well they have to start somewhere and besides, there are a large of percentage of subscribers who only get DSTV for the sports. But you will also see in the articale that the Olympic channel will be replaced with a general entertainment channel.

Same as the current PVR decoders which will be discontinued soon.

All indications are that the current PVR will continue for some time, as many of the channels will still be in standard definition for a while still. If you are currently using your PVR for multi room viewing (i.e. 2 view & 1 record), you are advised to keep it for the following reasons:

  1. HD PVR is single view and record two channels; no multi view option
  2. They're working on a mechanism to connect your PVR to the HD PVR as a slave; PVR will still be used as is, for multi room viewing, but only in SD.
  3. Indications are that this will be a no cost option. Yeah right...I'll wait and see
