First DSTV HD channel

Why pay for yet another device that I don't really own, and that I can't use for anything else but DSTV? ICASA should have forced all the providers to use standard hardware. It would have opened the market a lot more, and be a big win for the consumer.

Has anybody listened to ZA Tech Show and specifically episode 9? If not, go and take a listen. The guys chatted to Gerdus van Eeden who is the CTO of Multichoice about DSTV's HDTV offering. A LOT of your questions will be answered there.

Also read the Emerging Technologies thread on the DSTV forum. A very informative forum since there are guys on there that work at MC to answer any questions.

  1. They're working on a mechanism to connect your PVR to the HD PVR as a slave; PVR will still be used as is, for multi room viewing, but only in SD.

i've heard of 2 for the price of 1, but 1 for the price of 2  . ?? essentially u will hav 2 machines that perform a function that 1 machine could hav done.

  1. Indications are that this will be a no cost option. Yeah right...I'll wait and see

what is the chance?

hmmm need a new HD pvr decoder..

alreay have normal pvr, i wonder if they gonna swap the old out..
dont think so.
they prob make u buy the new for another 3k odd
.

there are a large of percentage of subscribers who only get DSTV for the sports.
If i could just subscribe to sports then i would.....great news from MC....can't wait to get the F1 in HD :). I'm getting the fullHD 1080p plasma. Heard that that will be the standard soon even though that fool from MC said 720p will be considered HD.....I don't believe him as most of the HD channels in japan and the states are 1080p.....soooo...spending R14k on "HD-ready" is a waste of cash....spend the R18k/R20k on a decent 1080p....

Also, I have a standard decoder......and not a pvr....would be nice if they will make that HD-pvr <-> decoder "connection" also work for the standard decoder and not just the pvr...

@the graduate, @magneto as I mentioned above, read the DSTV Emerging Technologies forums. You'll get most of your answers on multiroom functionality.

Yep, I agree on this one.

I think I will be holding back for some time. Wait and see approach to see what other offerings come around the corner, or the next...

Wish we would at least get an idea of the competitions plans. Seriously, If I was the other broadcasters I would be in 6th gear marketing drive to ensure that people waited for my offering or at least dented MC HD drive.

Seems strange all is so quite??

DStv will launch its first high-definition channel in August

Hahahah! 3 Years behind and they are proud to launch their first channel? at that Price! (if not gonna go up even further!)

In the USA they don't pay an arm and a leg for TV, and most of their channels are already HD. DSTV is a joke!

I prefer my Series in HD thankyou, and have been enjoying it for the last few years like that, and without ads too! Dstv FTL!

i reckon they can keep it. lets see the competitors to Multichoice as that is when things will start getting exciting.

think about it, R500 pm is heavy. put on another R150 and you can buy yourself a nice little Volkswagen Golf.

BRING THE COMPETITION!!!!!!!!

*yawn*

HD quality of rubbish I never watch is just as "Exciting" as watching paint dry.

They said that the price wont be far frm the current pvr price. I hope it will have enhenced pvr capabilities.

I have news for you....
High Definition has three critea namely:
  1. Minimum of 720 vertical scan lines
  2. Interlaced or Progressive scanning system
  3. Refresh rate (either 50 or 60 Hz)
Therefore 720p is considered High Definition and that's what will be rolled out in South Africa. I believe that 1080p will not be rolled out due to spectrum restrictions/limitations. Unless you're a gamer, buying a 1080p TV is overkill and a waste of money; more of a sales hype in South Africa. So the MC guy was correct.

As far as the HD-PVR and decoder pairing goes, I hear that only the new 1110 DSTV decoder can pair with the new HD PVR.

US HD broadacsts are 1080i not 1080p.
Multichoice and SABC (when they get around to it) will broadcast in 720p.
What no one is saying is that you will have to replace your Dual LNB with A quad LNB and replace some cabling. Single/dual LNB's dont have the bandwidth for HD.

Therefore 720p is considered High Definition and that's what will be rolled out in South Africa..

Never mind the fact that you need a 42" tv to even begin to see the difference between 720p and 1080p.

Oh c@p is that all! Does that mean it can be all pixelated and blocky ?

What’s the minimum resolution to be considered HD

I think the opening ceremony is going to look incredible in HD. I wonder what the price of the HD PVR decoder will be and whether or not you'd get a rebate on your previous PVR?
