I think the mineral oil or whatever they use doesnt conduct electricity...otherwise you would be stuffed :P

Yes, but I want to see pics and wanna know if the guy ever got his horse laxatives :D

Maybe he drank it, thinking it was Water by accident, and now thats why we no-longer see him here

I'm back, sorry for not checking this thread. I'm still waiting for the oil, they some how lost my order, I phoned on Monday and they're taking R100 off the pricing because of the mess up(which I'm not moaning about :P).

They said either Thursday or Friday, I'm actually really getting impatient and excited all at once heh heh. :P Talk back soon.

Good to know.

Pics when you are finished :)

Sorry for being lazy (not reading thread) but what's the general idea/procedure of this, and what if any result gains in cooling performance have people experienced?

In case it wasn't covered:

Mineral oil or liquid petrolatum is a by-product in the distillation of petroleum to produce gasoline. It is a transparent, colorless oil composed mainly of alkanes (typically 15 to 40 carbons) [1] and cyclic paraffins, related to white petrolatum. It has a density of around 0.8 g/cm3.[2]. Mineral oil is a substance of relatively low value, and it is produced in very large quantities. Mineral oil is available in light and heavy grades, and can often be found in drug stores.

Someone also mentioned (meta cafe link), wouldn't oil seep into the HDD, to which someone else said no as HDD are completely airtight. I dispute this as I have seen HDDs that have a hole, if very small, that seems to have a filter in it, obviously to keep out dust.

So be mindfull of that if you're going to submerge your HDD.

Impatient.......

:p

You and me too. lawl. I'm still waiting actually. I'm going to phone them tomorrow and ask what's happening. But I promise that it's going to happen. :P Still waiting for the oil

As for the HDD question above. It's not submerged. I glue-gunned it to the inner top of the highest part in the tank. Fits perfectly, no oil going to touch at all.

Why not use distilled water?

That would work, as long as it remains totally pure, 'cos any slight contamination will cause the water to become conductive.

Probably not a good idea unless it can be kept totally clean.

That being said how is the oil actually cooled in this system, is it circulated, or does it just rely on natural heat currents (heat rising) and contact with air?

Well I think if you want to do anything hectic with the system, like game, then you have to circulate the water through a pump and filter vibe, but if you are just gonna do basic things then it will run stable just on circulating the oil and having the excess heat escape out the top of the tank I presume.
