Fixed IP address

vi is the best programming tool ever.

If you don't speak vi, you're an eternal noob.

For having an IP address that doesn't change.
Useful if there's firewall stuff involved.

I still think I'll need one down the line though I want to delve deeper into pfsense and squid proxy.

Can I do that without a static IP as well?

You can do anything you can do with a static ip without a static ip. In some cases it becomes a little more difficult to do stuff without static ip's but not impossible. For what you want to do, you really don't need a static ip at all.
