Flat-rated smartphone data packages are difficult says Vodacom

Unlikely vodacom takes too much joy in watching us moan about being ripped off and then watching us pay their prices anyway. I would definitely move to 8ta if they covered my area. In fact, if they covered any real area.

Doesn't 8ta roam onto MTN?

Once you reconcile for us the ridiculous profits VC's posting against their constant moaning and lethargic attitude towards lowering prices.
So you can't then. Thought so.

Guys, a number of points raised above are very high on our priority list, including getting real-time capabilities and notifications on contract.

You might not think so but we WANT you to buy a bundle and not go OOB and statistically nearly 100% of our base manage to do this. But a number still get caught by OOB.

How many of you have ALTNUM configured? Or CLL? These systems have been in place for a number of years to help you not go OOB on contract. Yet the uptake is something like 3%.

Much like Data SIM on Topup, I want ALTNUM on Topup, but Vodacom will not let me have these luxuries (on Topup), and the only reason I am on Topup and not contract is that there is no realtime hard capping on contract.

What is CLL?

People want the latest technology. Cellular companies sell it to them but are unwilling (no, not unable, the R149 package proves that) to keep their contracts up to date and on par with the latest tech.
Eventually they will give us the R149 bolt on, by the time that the devices they sell to us are using that as a bare minimum.

Customers are less important than the bottom line it would seem, easy enough to see why though, no real competition.

All the squares on this monopoly board are already full.

Call Limit Lock - You specify a amount that the line is allowed to reach for usage (calls, sms, mms, data) and once that amount is reached...the line is locked for outgoing transactions untill the 1st of the next month when the system will unlock and reset your counter again.

Great so can I set it to lock when my data bundle = 0MB?

Search vodacom site for CLL, absolutely no info, clients cant use a service when they do not know it exists.

ALTNUM would not be needed if the vodacom site allowed me to see what my bundles are in a real sense.
I have a 2+2 contract, When I log into the site via a cellphone the only info I can get is how much in total of that as well as previous month is left.
Not how much normal data is left, not how much current I am using or previous I am using.
no real info.

When I log on to the website I have no details of anything when I go over OOB (this month my account stands at R507, I can't see why anywhere on the mobile or website, I can't see how much I went over, all I can see is that I used 2GB of my bundle last month but no further info whatsoever).

This would make a good intro for a Douglass Adams book.

Which basement should I crawl into exactly to find out what services vodacom offers and what my usage actually is?

I know it as "Call Limit", I have used it in the past on my voice contracts but I found it to be counter intuitive and completely ineffective due to the lack of realtime billing/usage. Another problem I experienced with with Call Limit is that it kicks in for purchases of bundled services instead of applying only to usage outside of already purchased bundles, this caused me to have to temporarily increase the limit a few times and I eventually gave up on Call Limit (mainly due to the lack of realtime billing).

Except (as I found out when I first got my 2+2 contract) if you have a night owl and actually want to use it you can't lock your normal usage because you would have to lock the whole contract at 2GB.

I once had my house broken into, I was on PAYG at the time, luckily my wife had airtime as I ran out about 15 minutes in.
I would hate to get lost in the middle of nowhere and not be able to use navigation on my phone because I was forced to put a lock on the amount of data I use simply to avoid the OOB shark.

Update on voice billing is rather quick. Also, you get notifications for how much of your CLL you have reached...think it SMS's you on 50% 70% 90% and then lock notification...so you have a idea of where you are in your call limit.

That is correct...unfortunately the limit only cares about payable usage that is sitting on your proposed invoice. It does not care about any bundles that is left on the line. I dont know if it is possible to actually implement a limit system that will lock the line for payable transactions, but leave it open still for bundles to be used. I do not think this can be done.

I would give Call Limit another chance if I knew that there was realtime billing (voice and data) like there is on prepaid / Topup contracts, but I would like Call Limit to work with normal data usage outside of Night Owl data like AstroTurf mentioned.

If Vodacom never made any profits they cant invest in newer technology and they would go under and bankrupt then we would only have MTN and Cell C...
All the Service Providers are offering similar packages, if they could supply cheaper data they would right?
I think they waiting to roll out LTE, 2 - 3 years after LTE, I expect data prices to be ridiculously cheap.

Thats if my assumption of LTE being the "final frontier" in wireless?

I believe it can be done, IF there is a will to do it. Vodacom would have done it long ago if they were the ones being reamed.

Yep, the bottom line is more important than the customers in a monopoly.

Why not just make it R0?

Computer says no! R50 minimum

Also...if you think about it...if you have R0.00 as the limit...it will either lock it emmediately or it wont give the system enough time to lock the line really. Think R50.00 is used as kind of a buffer to give the system some space to work with.
