Flying in Style!

The A340 only climbs because the earth is curved :p the earlier models hairdryers didn't do much to help this.

Out of CPT the 777's probably use reduced takeoff power, but out of Joburg you can see the turbines glowing red as the aircraft come over you especially on the longer routes like Delta's Atlanta flight. There have been a few summer days where delta has actually left cargo behind to stay in WAT imposed limits
yeah the a340-300 is ridiculous. The Lufthansa one flies over my house and it is loud and low. The 777-300's (Emirates/Qatar) rocket out of CT but the -200's seem to climb at like half the rate. Perhaps it's just airline polies and the middle eastern airlines don't care about fuel

On the ancient 777-200LRs and 300ERs with the GE90-110/115 mills. The power on the upcoming 777X is scary, as we saw at the Farnborough vertical climb.

Enjoyed a 12.5 hour flight from Frankfurt to Singapore in the nose of a Lufthansa B747-8.

Slept a full 8 hours, she really is the Queen of the Skies!

Flew from there to here in 1st class for free once. Also 747.

The 777-300ER has an extra thrust setting called bump thrust, which is used at high elevation ports when at heavy weight. JNB is the only port in our network where we use bump thrust. Even with that, we still lose about 30 tons of take off weight when departing at noon during warm days, down from 350t to 320t.

The X's engines did break the record for most thrust produced by a jet engine, but their max thrust will actually be rated a bit lower than the ER's engines.

Wonder what the performance differential is on the 777 vs A350 out of JHB in summer

Just checked today's conditions and they seem to be down from 280t to 263t. So a little more in summer, maybe 20t. Actually about 1.5% less weight penalty than the ER.

Sometimes it's the long sleep ...

Many happy safe returns!

Sad times, recieved the following email:

We're really sorry that your upcoming flight to Edinburgh on Saturday 23 December 2023 has been cancelled. To get your travel plans back on track, you can review your options below:

I had to rebook on the later flight with a 4 hour layover :(

This is one is on the older 777-300ER which is the regular BA to CPT flight that leaves 8.55PM

Message from the future: It wasn't worth it.
Totally worth it.

Recently upgraded my flight from Montreal to Cape Town to Business class on United. Cost around R10k extra over my original premium economy. Would pay that again, unfortunately it's normally way more expensive for business class upgrades.

Hoping so haha

The amount of times BA has canceled I will be lucky to leave cape town lol

For long haul flights I honestly would rather not fly than fly economy. Lots of airlines have a premium economy which is a pretty decent upgrade (depending on the airline) so that is my minimum requirement now when doing these long trips.

For me, the most significant upgrade is the one that takes you from upright to flat. Econ => bigger Econ, or Business => First are ok if you want to treat yourself, but don’t have the same bang for buck.

I'm staggered by how much long-haul business class prices have gone up in the last year. Wife and I regularly fly to-from the US. This year CPT-DFW return tickets are about R100k more than 18 months ago. A goodly portion of the increase is in the ever-shrinking Rand, and some in higher fuel costs. But I can't help thinking that they're milking travellers to make up some of the covid losses, just because they can. Blerry outrageous. I'm now looking at travelling via Sao Paulo, but the problem is that one leg is SAA. Eish.

Our first class flights from the US to UK and back this year were about $10k for 2 on BA, so around R100k/ticket. I can’t recall, but this was about half the US to SA flight (two leg).

Depending on where we are next time we decide to visit Cape Town, we may take the United direct flight from NY.

Bliksem some of you okes are ballers. Here I am sitting next to an oversized African mamma with non-existing personal space flying from Jhb to CPT on some Flysafair plane.
