Hey All,

I have a Sony Xperia C4 running Android 5.0

The FNB Banking app has been working without any problems for a loooong time but, as of the ~2-3 updates, the updates started to fail to install. I would get:

can't install app error code -504

I thought this was most likely because my phone is rooted and so, as I do not want to use a banking app that is out of date, and cannot get around using the app, I decided to factory reset the device, and completely unroot it.

After all of that, the problem persists. I read some articles online and some people suggested clearing the Play store cache, as well as uninstalling all updates to Play store, reboot the phone, and then try again. I did this and now, I get the following error when trying to install the app:

Unknown error code during application install: -504

So note, it downloads fine but, it simply fails to uninstall. Anyone else seen this?

Thank you in advance!

Funny enough the one marked for Tablets does install but, of course it is not usable on a phone.

Try downloading from another device. Send the apk to your phone and install that way.

It was, then I factory reset and unrooted, still no joy. I then read that sometimes apps leave artefacts in the /data/data directory that can cause these kinds of error. So, I rooted again, checked /data/data but no left over folder or files :(

Trying to download the APK now but, so far not having any luck.

Another weird thing I am noticing, is that if I go to the play store on my laptop, navigate to the FNB app, the button states "installed". If I click it, it shows that the FNB app is already installed on my device but, it is not. This seems to point to the possible reason for the error I am getting. I have cleared data and cache for the Play store app, I have also uninstalled all updates for the Play store and restarted the phone but, the same thing keeps happening.

Download the Capitec app see if it installs (just so we make sure your phone is not fixed and this is a FNB + something with you phone clash)

Installed both Capitec as well as the ABSA banking up without any problems. Also, as mentioned earlier, the FNB app for tablets installs without any problem but, it is of course completely useless on a phone.

Try clearing cache and data of Google play services

I had to buy a new phone. Used the ROM from the manufacturer to upgrade my phone and after that could not install the app again. Had no problem with Capitec app.

FNB where no joy in sorting it out.

And the problem is, if you want to add a beneficiary, want to Buy airtime or any such thing, you need the app to complete the transaction.

Discovered that when I needed to make an emergency EFT and could not as my tablet (the only device back then with FNB app) was not with me.

At least with Capitec I get an option to have a dongle or an app (that works on every device). Also the fact that Capitec can sort you out in 5 minutes at hours that work for you (longer trading hours and open on Sunday).
