FNB downtime causes customer backlash

Radio adverts... on Primedia Broadcasting.

A guy named Steve is calling from BEEP Bank... trying to lure customers to his bank.
But every customer he calls is already happy with, or has recently switched to FNB.

They play them every flipping 5 minutes on 702 and Highveld.
I've taken to turning the radio off for long periods between those ads, the E-tag adverts and the Eskom adverts.

I need to buy some new CDs for the car. :(
 
I haven't heard that on Cape Talk (702), so must be a GP ad.

Don't know about others, but if I didn't have a standard bank CC, I'd have been left hi and dry many times with FNB.

I go to pay and the POS hangs for around a minute or two until it declines (cannot contact merchant bank), swipe the Standard CC and goes through instantly...

Jordaan explained that the source of the downtime was a power failure in Randburg, with the added problem of backup power failure.

Not the first time this has happened to someone.
 
Although not happy with the outage, I'm more inclined to give FNB a bit of leniency considering the excellent service and products I've received from them. With my previous bank that would've been a different story. Hope they find the cause, this is the second widespread outage in recent times.

The two are completely unrelated ...
 
What's a little downtime between friends? This happens to IT systems all over the country, and all over the world. The biggest and best companies are affected - Facebook, Microsoft, Google, etc. Sh|t happens, but it's not the end of the world. Get over it. Or if you can't, then stop using IT systems altogether, since there will at some point be downtime.

FNB - still my favourite bank.

Agreed. I think what matters most here is how often it will happen. I think its the 1st time this has ever happened. That said there is some embarrassment that happened if you were declined while trying to shop. Especially when there is a queue behind you [God forbid they have to void all your stuff you wanted to buy]

Exactly what happened to me at Cresta this afternoon. All cards declined, every FNB ATM offline. couldn't get through to the call center as I wanted to draw the cash from a different bank - but the fees are ridiculous - so I wanted to see if they would be waved. Left with nothing.

Was in PnP - Fiancee started drinking cold drink, got to the till and couldn't pay. Cold drink was on the house :)

But seriously. I would think they would have some kind of fallback system. Like if something similar to this happens, backup system in Cape Town (just an example) takes over...

Apparently the fall back system too 'enjoyed' a power outage. Maybe its FNBs way of forcing the community to give back to its customers - free cold drinks etc lmao

No the backup ups failed. Not the dr site.

Dr takes a while to invoke especially on a dirty shutdown of a transactional system.

Having done DR exercises with some of our banks, no it doesn't their sites run 1:1 if one goes down the other one has a live copy of exactly what is going on.
 
Walked out of a store, leaving the salesman to wonder when he will get a sale like that again...
