FNB downtime causes customer backlash

What's a little downtime between friends? This happens to IT systems all over the country, and all over the world. The biggest and best companies are affected - Facebook, Microsoft, Google, etc. Sh|t happens, but it's not the end of the world. Get over it. Or if you can't, then stop using IT systems altogether, since there will at some point be downtime.

FNB - still my favourite bank.

Well said :)

Was not a pretty sight at petrol stations last night - many people stranded with a just filled up car and no way to pay (and then shortly after the same dining out) - places a lot of embarassment on customers. I had to bail out a few people yesterday - but then I bank with Steve ;-)

I ABSAlutely agree with you.
I banked at ABSA many years ago. I wanted to take out a R5000 loan to buy a new computer. I had only been working for about a year and banking with them for about 3. They wanted my parents to stand surety. They did. The bank declined the application. Insufficient surety. My father listed his house (paid off) and 2 cars on the surety form.
My parents banked at FNB and applied there. Within 48 hours they were called to say the money will reflect in their account with 3working days. I used to have a BOB T account at that stage. I immediately went to FNB. The BOB T account still active. I upgraded it to a normal adult savings account and have never looked back. I now have a Platinum cheque & credit card with FNB. Four investment accounts, a home loan and I'm on my 4th Wesbank financed vehicle. My wife also has the Platinum cheq and credit card due to my insistance. All 3 of my kids have FNB accounts.
This would all have been ABSA business had they given me that R5000 loan. I'm glad they declined.

Even with their downtime and other ineresting quirks,
I wont leave FNB in a hurry.
A bit more downtime but great service is still better than less downtime and KAK service from ABSA...

power failure in randburg caused the entire fnb network to go down? that means the generators either didn't kick in couldn't handle the load. its winter coming so better sought ur stuff before more power outages

It's running in generator right now.

The UPSs tripped- cause by a massive power spike. Agreed they better fix those UPSs...

We have a UPS at work that does a really good job... until you have a mains dip :(. The modern CPU controlled ups's are terrible things.

really would like to know how a whole banking system goes down due to power failure? whatever happened to having redundant systems in place that kick in or take over when primary ones fail? Google may go down but sure as hell the entire operations ie docs, news, maps, etc do not switch off. This is twice this year that FNB has gone down. The 1st time they said a server fell over and yeah again they had to drop the rest of the system. Sounds really poor and does not seem to have some of fail-safe system in place. Somebody better get fired....

I made the best choice joining ABSA!

I don't like to make a personal comment here very often, but your comment deserves one: You're an idiot. ABSA are so bad in so many ways you really have to be blind and stupid to choose them. Only their private banking is OK, but then again all the banks are pretty good when it comes to private banking, so no win there. Enjoy getting raped by ABSA.

Standard Bank did have an issue, but it was last year Jan not this year Jan.

All the banks have had a few issues over the last few years, considering what all of them charge you would expect better failsafe measures to be in place. With FNB being on the cutting edge I expect a few niggles here and there, but a bit disappointed with this failure. Luckily for them unless this becomes a repeat issue they are still by far the best option in SA for now.

All systems have downtime. ABSA is the lowest of the low.

Which is fair, but they are losing executives left right and center and not "retrenching". I left ABSA not due to the service, but my confidence in how the bank is being run

Absa private bank is a joke. I have to threaten my private banker with calls to his boss to get him to answer my emails. And even then he's not helpful. And for this lack of service I pay R400 per month. My fnb platinum banker is several orders of magnitude better.
