FNB Global Account Card

Okay, took about 4 days for FNB to reactivate the account. Apparently you need to continuously deposit funds, else they will place a hard hold on the account and/or close it. Seems they do not like it if you only make a once-off deposit of a couple hundred Dollars.

Now waiting for my card to be delivered.

Will be interesting if someone knows the costs associated with using the card for international purchases. Is it cheaper than making use of your credit / cheque card abroad?
Of course its cheaper, because the card itself works like a debit card in the country you are operating in. Instead of you contacting your bank, telling them you are travelling and cards you will be using AND then when you do use the card, spot rate and transaction costs occur per each transaction you swipe.

By using the global account card, fund in dollar ahead and save in dollars, or pounds whatever. The card works like a bomb and you dont deal with the conversion costs and transactional costs for each transaction.
The global card has essentially replaced travellers cheques back in the day.

Your account was closed purely due too inactivity. Its all automated. The account goes inactive after 3 months of no use or transactions. 6 months stale and will be held. Its there for 2 reasons this account

1) Easy way to save funds and store your dollars, as well as an account should you need to transfer
2) Use for travel. Acts as a debt card, as if you were living and working in the country itself

Its a great account to have

I have never put money in my global amounts for years and they have never been locked. Are you FNB private client or private wealth?

Were you earning interest on the global account in question? Perhaps that prevents it being considered dormant.

I got an email about a year ago saying my Global account was inactive, it had about 50 euros in it for about 4 years I'd imagine. So I put another 50 euros in and all good with LoungeKey again.

To add to the convo:

Used to be PW for years and had dormant global accounts (still dormant). Cards worked for lounge visits.

Downgraded/closed most of my FNB accounts to the bare minimum, global cards still dormant, and fully working with all EU&UK applicable lounges.

I'm just checking back the dates, last time I used the card for withdrawing was I think in Turkey June 2019. That deposit I talked of was April 2023. So nearly 4 years before they pulled me up about non use. And I'm using the LoungeKey passes quite often, was about 8 passes last year and this year I've used a couple as well.

Maybe you've got a message coming soon :p

haha will keep an eye out :)

Interestingly enough, my EUR Global card expired and I couldn't find the replacement. When I logged onto the LoungeKey website, it said I had to update my card details. Tried entering my (still valid) USD card, did $1 verification, and something failed.

Then I remembered I had a USD LoungeKey account too, logged in there and I also had to update/verify the card again. Entered the USD card number and it worked just fine.

Searched around, found the replacement EUR card. Entered that one into the EUR LoungeKey account, and it worked just fine. So no idea if it failed with the USD account because it is a different underlying account, or simply because it was already used in another account.

Regarding loungekey access, do you have to have a physical card? I tried signing up using the virtual card, and it says it's not a valid card (which, considering how hard all the banks are pushing us to use virtual cards, is bloody ridiculous)

Yes, I also had an issue with a virtual card. The biggest issue is that lounges in the bigger airports are just always full, and you end up sometimes not even getting inside!

Requires physical card for sign up on app or access to lounge if no app.

Yip. Some lounges we've been to have all over have home affairs long lines waiting outside. Or they let you in while saying 'take a look inside- we can't guarantee you will get a seat- but can't refund you if you dont'.

Can a virtual card be used for monthly debit orders?
