FNB to drop support for IE6

First National Bank said that their online services will soon no longer support Microsoft's ageing Internet Explorer 6 web browser
 
About damn time, now if only more companies stopped supporting this dinosaur.
 
Thank heavens!!! We stopped developing websites to work in IE6 in the 1st quarter of last year. It's just too much admin and IE6 has so many security vulnerabilities.
 
Do all online Browsers use up the same amount of Bandwith or are some more Economical than others?
Opera Mini for Cellphones uses Compression technology & uses less data....
Does any techno-fundi have a suggestion or comment?
 
Maybe that might finally convince IT at work to roll out IE8....

Is/was IE6 really that bad? Obviously it doesn't support newer security features and other various technologies, but is it so vastly different from what came afterwards that it needs to be dragged out into the street and shot? Or is it just that things have changed so much in the last 10 years that having these clients out there is just more legacy crap to deal with. Will we have the same thing in a few years with everyone calling to have IE7 discontinued? (I'm asking from a non-web designer point of view - I really don't know, so am just curious).
 
not sure why this actually was news-worthy. developers will know that having any site working with IE6 and it's lack of proper CSS/HTML implementation and non-compliance with many W3C standards is a major support issue.

When it came out, it was awesome. Remember it launched before the first firefox even came out. It's that old! The big problem was that it was advanced for its time and did cool effects and stuff, that weren't in the W3C specifications. Then when W3C implemented the exact same functionality, they did a different way, which "broke" IE6. MS also dropped the ball by not retrofitting the finalised spec into IE6. If this sounds familiar, you're right - it's exactly what's happening with HTML5. Without a finalised spec (finalizes in 2014?) chrome/ff/ie9 are implementing what they think is the right way. When the spec is finalised, we'll have 4 years of dodgy HTML5 based on the draft spec. We're heading for an IE6 situation all over again.

A good example is the ACID3 test. If a browser gets 100% on it, they're actually not compliant, as it tests some features already eliminated in a later draft spec that the ACID3 test was based on. Another example is the bun-fight going on over the video format - H.264 vs WebM. If the browsers want to stay complaint to the spec, they'll have to just drop a bunch of things that currently work (which means the sites will break for people that don't update their browsers), or keep them in and allow developers to use them, and we're back at an IE6 situation.

Fun. Not. W3C is f***ing useless. It's all their fault.
 
Finally, now for everyone to join in and how about killing IE7 or IE in general...
