Glimmer of hope? Ford refuses to rule out right-hand-drive Bronco...

When the new Ford Bronco was revealed in July 2020, the Blue Oval brand’s local arm told us there were no plans to build the off-roader in right-hand-drive form. But the vehicle’s chief designer refuses to rule it out.

Paul Wraith, Ford’s chief designer on the Bronco project, suggested to Ford Authority a right-hand-drive version was not off the table.

“We’ve optimised for left-hand drive,” Wraith told the publication.

“But we did look at right-hand drive, and Bronco is intensely famous here in the US but it’s pretty famous – or at least it was famous – elsewhere in the world. We’re always open to do all sorts of things in the future, but right now, we’re left-hand-drive focused,” he said.

Still, Wraith pointed out since the Bronco is quite closely related to the Ranger bakkie, the platform is set up for right-hand drive, too.

Like the new Ford Bronco? Like big V8s? Then one suspects you will rather like this. Hennessey Performance Engineering has announced its intention to modify Ford’s reborn off-roader by furnishing it with a big V8. Fittingly, the car is called the ‘VelociRaptor V8 Bronco’.

And thus, in comes Ford’s 5.0-litre V8, treated to a 3.0-litre supercharger system, an air-to-water intercooler, upgraded injectors, an upgraded fuel system and a stainless steel exhaust setup. The shiny new V8 is mated to Ford’s 10-speed automatic gearbox. We’re surprised Hennessey didn’t shove a few extra gears in there. More is better, right?

Power from this modified Bronco stands at a heady 750bhp – quite a leap from the 310bhp offered from the factory’s Ecoboost V6 engine – and that means a 0-60mph time of 4.5s. The car’s new visual prowess comes courtesy of a new bonnet with that all-important scoop, new aluminium wheels, lots of badges, a custom livery, a new grille and even embroidered headrests.

Ever since Ford reincarnated the Bronco, fans have been crying for a V8 version, or at the very least a Raptor variant of some kind, but rumours so far indicate that Ford won’t be launching an eight-cylinder version, likely because it jeopardises the company’s CO2 targets.

But that won’t apply to Texas Tuner Hennessey, which is already known for its wild VelociRaptor creations. The latest of which is a V8 version of the new Bronco.

Set to become a reality after the new Bronco goes into production in 2021 the Hennessey Velociraptor V8 Bronco will be powered by a supercharged 5-litre Ford V8 engine, tuned to produce a wholesome 560kW. The power unit will be paired with the familiar 10-speed autobox and the tuner says it’ll surge from zero to 96km/h in just 4.5 seconds.

However, given that Ford isn’t planning to offer South Africans a right-hand drive Bronco, this Velociraptor will remain forbidden fruit to local petrolheads.

I am about to get the Defender (Jan-Feb 2021) but if the right-hand drive Bronco is announced and coming to South Africa I may wait for it instead.
 
COVID-19 Is Bucking Up Ford's Bronco Launch

Excited to drive the new Ford Bronco next spring, were you? Well, you won’t, as Ford announced today that both two- and four-door versions of the highly anticipated and high-riding SUV have been delayed until summer 2021.

The blame, as it tends to these days, rests with the ongoing pandemic. Jiyan Cadiz, Bronco communications manager, told the Detroit Free Press that supplier issues have thwarted production:

The all-new Bronco two-door and four-door customer deliveries will begin in the summer rather than the spring due to COVID-related challenges our suppliers are experiencing.

Cadiz added some critical information for those looking to place orders:

Reservation holders will be notified their orders will now be starting in mid-January instead of Monday, Dec. 7. Reservation holders now have until March 19 to finalize their dealer selection, place their order and agree to the selling price.

Here’s why I think it will succeed.

Engineers used the Ford Escape and Lincoln Corsair’s architecture as the starting point for the Bronco Sport.

This means the little Jeep Compass competitor is built on a transverse-engine, front-wheel-drive-based unibody platform (though all Bronco Sports come standard with four-wheel drive, for clout) with a MacPherson strut suspension in the front and a multilink design out back.

In 2020, Ford pledged to offer over 150 factory-developed or factory-authorized accessories for the 2021 Bronco. Not only will it keep its promise, it will go above and beyond by giving buyers a list of over 300 parts to choose from.

It hasn't published official details yet, but the catalog it sent to its dealers has been leaked online, along with an internal order guide that reveals the truck's standard features and extra-cost option packages.

Enthusiast forum Bronco6G has published the list. It includes over 300 items developed in-house or with trusted suppliers to fit the two- and the four-door versions of the Bronco.

If you want to customize the exterior, you'll have dozens of parts to choose from, including mud flaps, spare tire covers, rock rails, and step bars.

Interior accessories are largely limited to floor liners, pet harnesses, and cargo organizers, while the electronics section lists add-ons like remote engine start systems and a range-extending antenna.

Thule and Yakima are part of the accessory program, too. River explorers can spend $239 on a roof-mounted kayak carrier made by Thule, for example, while a hitch-mounted bike carrier built by Yakima is priced at $569. The catalog also includes roof-mounted tents, car covers, roof panel storage bags, and light bars.

Some of the accessories listed in the catalog will not be available at launch. The tube doors, the trailer brake controller, various exhaust system parts, the winch, several tow hooks, and different rear axles with ratios ranging from 4.88 to 5.38 are notably labeled as late availability, so they might not be offered until the 2022 model year.

It must have really sucked for fans to wait through decades of OJ Simpson jokes for the Ford Bronco to return, only to suffer COVID-19 manufacturing delays before the trucks finally started shipping to customers last year.

These pictures of two fresh Broncos meeting a fiery end in Greenfield, Illinois posted yesterday on a Bronco enthusiast form must really be testing their patience.

The two brand-new Ford Broncos were over-cooked in the hold of a comedically named “Reliable Carriers” closed vehicle trailer that caught fire. It’s unclear where the Broncos were headed, but they never made it.

The Broncos themselves were not suspected to be the cause of the fire, according to the source of the photos, Fedexman1978 on the Bronco6G.com forums.

The user claimed it was likely the friction from a stuck brake or an unnoticed flat tire on the trailer that started the fire.

The two Broncos were spotted being unloaded onto flatbeds after the fire was put out at a Greeneville truck stop. A crane was brought in to help hoist open the large trailer door for the operation.

Since I couldn’t help but appreciate the humour of “Reliable Carriers” having their name spread all over popular Ford forums for something rather unreliable happening, I reached out to the company about the incident. I was immediately contacted by a Ford spokesperson, via Reliable Carriers, who informed me Ford is aware of the incident and investigating.

First new-gen Ford Bronco fetches more than R16-million at auction!

No, that’s not a typo in the headline. The very first new-generation Ford Bronco has just been sold for a whopping $1 075 000 (more than R16-million) at auction in the United States.

The special Bronco went under the hammer at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction in Arizona, with the full proceeds of the sale going to charity (split between the National Forest Foundation and Outward Bound). The buyer’s name has not been disclosed.

The Bronco in question bears VIN 001, and is described as a “fully loaded” First Edition two-door model finished in Lightning Blue exterior paint and featuring Navy Pier leather-trimmed seats (with heating functions up front).

As a reminder, the First Edition series includes all the mechanical components of the Badlands version, along with the posher interior of the Outer Banks model and the blacked-out exterior of the Wildtrak. It furthermore features the so-called Sasquatch package, complete with factory 35-inch tyres.
