Hi guys

Just a quick question. I bought a ford ecosport brand new from a dealership. We filled the tank and drove 5km home. The tank showed full and onboard computer estimated 700+km i could drive with the tank.

This morning we started the car and now the tank is just above 3 quarters and computer shows we can drive only 560km.

Is this normal?

Seems like the fuel tank sensor might have been stuck. Have it checked out

Also remember that the onboard computer needs a bit more data before giving an accurate estimation of distance left. Mine tends to only start getting close to a good average after 250km. Also I have noticed that the distance left is conservative.

The other problem might be that someone stole some diesel from your car ;)

Probably had air in the tank from filling which has now escaped, how many liters did it take to fill the tank when you filled up yesterday compared to the tank size. Those trip computers balance and correct themselves constantly, what was your fuel consumption on the 5km you drove home.

Something is not right. Give it a tank or 2 to let it settle then take it back. Don't want them fiddling with a new car if not needed.

Nope, take back to dealer.

Thanks everyone

I went back to the dealership and the salesman told me that this is only the first tank of diesel and that the onboard computer still need to monitor usage and make calculations. According to them I should give it another 1000-2000km and will then be able to see if there are any other problems. Whether this is correct or not, I do not know, I never bought a new Ford before, but may well be.

When I took delivery of the vehicle, the tank was just above a quarter and the car has a 52l tank. I threw 28l to fill it up. When leaving the garage and driving 5KM to my house it showed full. The computer also estimated just over 700km distance I could drive.

This morning when I started the vehicle, the tank was at 3-quarter and the computer estimated 560km range.

I do not think anything got stuck. As we drove to the dealership the diesel is still coming down. In fact, I now drove about 60km since filling up and the tank is just below 3-quarters.

@Pitbull, I agree, I did not want any fiddling at all. If there is a problem, I need the vehicle exchanged or want to be refunded.

From experience in my new 2014 Fiesta that I've done 26 000km in, sometimes when filling up with a Ford, if you leave the ignition on and watch the fuel guage go up, it shows an incorrect reading, but when you turn the ignition off and then back on it will show the correct reading, I've also had 2 occasions where I will ask the attendant to fill to the first click and then he will tell me it's full but when I switch on my car it's only 3 quarters, some kind of air lock but this has only happened twice. My dad's Ranger has also had the same problem where filling up with the ignition on caused weird readings. So try that next time maybe?

Nah, it has nothing to do with the petrol attendants. They did their jobs.

My gauge showed just below three quarters 30 minutes ago. Went to a garage and filled up again - and it took 4 litres of diesel.

So, this is a gauge issue on a brand new quarter of a million rand vehicle.

Wonder if I can return the vehicle and have it replaced without a workshop working on it?

Odds are very slim. They would work on it

Personally as mentioned before I would give it a few tanks to see if the problem sorts itself. If not they can repair it. If you really think it's an issue drive as little as possible and insist on a replacement. They can sell your vehicle again as a demo if not registered in your name yet. So should make it easier for them.

I paid R300,000, including the extras, and feel that there is a mechanical / electrical problem coming of the dealership floor. By the way, it had 60km on the clock when I took delivery.

I also feel, paying this money in cash, I do not want to have a brand new vehicle repaired in a couple of hours from receiving it. I really only want a new, working vehicle, which I expected when buying a brand new vehicle.

I agree fully. This is however not how it works in reality. I'm sure if you kick up enough stink they "might" just give in and give you a new one. It's however very very very unlikely.

Ah well, let's see.

I will park the car in the meantime.

Just sent an e-mail to a few Ford directors. Depending on their reply, I will start an Ombudsman complaint. After that probably appoint a lawyer and start civil actions.

If all fails, I will just sell it off.

Thanks, will read the post.

Still, spending almost 300K on a brand new vehicle and experiencing these technical problems is not what I signed up for. My attorney will intervene in terms of the CPA act on my behalf.

Suddenly the dealership says it is a minor setting that must be changed.

Still, vehicle is defective and I will stand on my rights. I do not want it fixed. Either replaced or refunded.

Thanks for the link Werner.

I see that this is quite a common problem on Ford vehicles, especially in the US. Most contributes the issue to calibration and tank capacity problems. It seems that there is (according to Google up to late last year) no fix for this problem at dealerships in the US.

Ford is bulls******g me by asking me to come in for a setting that need be changed.

Thanks again for this link.

You've given the dealership one day to rectify things and you're already going the attorney route? Shame

PS - that thread that got linked there was an owner that had his issue fixed with software update only. So it is not BS from the dealer, just a comprehension problem on your part.

Irrelevant.

Paying 300K for a brand new car you do not want to have to return it for software updates and repairs within 24 hours.

This is a serious investments. And, yes, with in 24 hours going the legal route because I know how dealerships work. They will try their utter best to rather repair defects than what they refund or replace the car.

If this was a second hand car where faults are expected, I understand, but this is a brand new car that should not have any defects.
