He suggested that perhaps pressure is leaking from the combustion chamber into the coolant channels in the block. Now to test this one can do what is known as a compression test whereby you measure how much compression each individual combustion chamber can hold to a manufactured specified range (usually performed if valves or gaskets are believed to be leaking. Should his theory ring true he would have a low and or progressively lower reading from this test as pressure would be lost to the cooling system.

So according to your theory, if a valve leaks and the compression test is therefor low, it might imply the pressure is lost into the cooling system.
