Hi guys.
Anyone driving a Ford Focus or Fiesta?

Please post your fuel consumption stats as I would like to compare notes.

On the ford website, and in various magazines, it states that 7.2l per 100km could be achieved with the Focus 1.6. How this is possible, I would love to know!
Im currently getting about 11l per 110km! And thats while making 'Driving Miss Daisy II'.

I would like some more stats before I approach the dealership and complain about this, because its false information.

I drive a 1.6Si and also get 11L/100km. At the moment I'm doing less than 15km a day so this type of consumption can be expected. On the open road it drops to about 9. Never seen 7 though.

I don't know what you are doing but I can get my Focus ST down to around 9L/100km...

then something aint right. Ill wait till I take my car in for a service and see what they say. Im seriously not happy with 11l/100km. and with petrol going up just about every month, its becoming more of an issue.

I can fairly easily get around 7.5 l/100km in a 2l Mondeo, loaded, on the open road.In some stretchs on the N3 in rush hour, I can get 6.2 over a 10km stretch.

11 sounds really, really high - like maybe one of the sensors is faulty.

Weird.

I'm driving a Smart Forfour 1,5 and get about 6.7L/100.
That's driving to Varsity every morning.

Have no idea why your 1.6 is crazy...

Complain.

I'm driving the 2007 model (I think, the newest one :p) Ford Fiesta 1.4 and getting on average 6l/100km, although I use the highways to get to university every morning.

getting about 10 driving like a granny and 15 with my foot flat.. though its an alfa 1.6 not a ford...

Hmm... I reckon with heavier cars, smaller engines actually use more fuel in city traffic. Takes more effort to get the car moving. That would explain the ST having better economy than the 1.6. I mean, I drive a 2l Turbo (Pretty lite) and I get 9l/100km driving it fairly hard. Open road gives just over 6.

I/WE have a 1.6Si 5DR in PTA,Gauteng and even with the higher altitude + loss of KW on a n/a. We get easily between 7.1-8.2, las tank was 7.6 560KM on 41L. Except when i go on a Run with the FordSTOwnersSA club, then it is @ 8.2-8.5 @ max speed +-180KM/h.
The extra body weight you only feel with the 1.6 on steep long uphills with a fully loaded car and it cruises happily @ 120-140. @ 100 you get excellent fuel econ @ the sacrifice of speed, but it works to drive a bit slower in traffic. Than to slow down and then accelerate all the way back up to 120-140. While gradually going with the flow of traffic and keeping a good distance from the other cars to try and anticipate the movements ahead by letting the car brake angainst engine compression when you see the cars starting to brake ahead and try to use as little brakes as possible keep the momentum by using engine braking/compression. Sometimes it works great, othertimes the people drive so unpredictably. Always keep a good following distance and be alert-sudden stops.

What also helps is on downhills, you should lift your foot from the accelerator, then on a downhill your car should about remain at the same speed but not use any fuel (given it's a modern car with fuel injectors). But you have to leave it in gear, don't make like some people and take it out of gear and idle it down, then you are still going to use some fuel to keep the car idling while leaving it in gear you use the compression to keep you rolling...

Agree, remember to use a relative high gear 4/5/6 depending on vehicle.
You should be able to see and feel which gear is correct for which hill.

Jip, the lowest I've gone with my ST was around 7.9L/100km highest was 40L/100km (this was on a track day :P)

Hi Kevin,

Im so glad you asked that question, I drive a Ford focus 1.6 zetec 05,
I Have been trying to ask people the same question as im doing pretty much the same mpg as you.

I Can confirm that im biteing the bullet so to speak and the car is going into Ford on Thursday to find out whats wrong.

Do you also notice when you are moving forward without pressing the gas the car seems to loose power then back (and so-on) also lack of power pulling away and all torque is at high revs.

God my car sounds knackered.

I Will let you know what Ford say on Thursday, (Wish me luck)

PaulBB1:
Is it the Facelift focus or the older 1, 1.6 Zetec sounds like the older 1.
The 2005 model that i have is referred to as the mk2 model and doesn't have a zetec as far as i know only the 2.0 are zetec, 2003-1.6-Sigma
, but anyway these guys have a nice P&P ecu for the 1.6 Zetec.
