Forget 8Mbps

Telkom are trying to phase out Diginet and prefer MARTIS as the new generation solution. But they have encountered extreme resistance from Diginet customers who are very happy with the QoS and are not prepared to pay for the more expensive MARTIS solution.

MARTIS is much better from a provisioning & management perspective. Recall us getting rid of all the diginets & moving to martis, couple of hundred circuits.

I would guess that their SDSL service runs across your normal standard 1 pair copper wire phone line and terminates at the DSLAM in your local exchange pretty much just like a standard ADSL circuit, and then into Telkom's ADSL cloud. Obviously you are going to have to pay a premium for the circuit being synchronous, but other than that I can't see how it's going to differ from a normal ADSL circuit.

Nope, definitely does not.

I don't see much benefit in SDSL, aside from torrents/Hub. Maybe the occasional sending of email. But on the whole there are other things they should fix first. Like the adsl rental or LLU etc.

That's why it is more suited to the business market.

Well ****. We pay so much for such a crappy speed, they might as well give us 4096 upload for free. Screw them.

Diginet (Plus) is Telkom's product name for providing syncronous/symmetrical point-to-point circuits/links (more commonly refered to as leased lines). These can range in speed from 64 -1984 Kbps and terminate either on a NTU with X.21 interface for low volume sites, or on an (aggregator) node with Channelised E1 interface(s) for larger volume sites (many links).

Martis is the name of the (latest) vendor/model range (owned by Tellabs) used by Telkom to provide these Diginet services.

The NTU or the aggregator

WHY can one not purchase this little bit of equipment outright
but
must keep on paying for it month after month

No-One has so far explained the difference between SHDSL and Diginet / Martis.

What the technical details are and HOW it is implemented

To my knowledge Martis provide NTUs, remote & core Nodes, basically an entire end-to-end solution. They are not the only vendor used by Telkom, just the newest.

If you hunt around you probably can, but you wont find it in retail, you'd have to find the local distributor (if there is one).

Anyways it wouldnt matter, as mentioned TDM multiplexer networks are deployed as an end-to-end system under the management of a single entity, the carrier/provider.

Different technology (from a different era). The one is circuit based (TDM) the other packet based (SM).

It's three completely different systems. I've only seen SHDSL implemented inside of Telkom and back then it was 2Mb/s.
