The iPhone is crap, the Nokia 2110 is the bestest phone ever - posted by a self confessed iPhone fanboy.

I think I am now aware of why we appear to agree so little when it comes to phones :) Hardware is first for me. As long as the phone can do most things, or you are able to find at least one app that does what you want it to, then I'm all good. I do not need 100 apps to choose between to achieve one goal. I am almost certain I'll find an app that does more or less what an app on any other OS does. I cannot, however, find an app that adds a xenon flash, gives me an HDMI slot, upgrades the camera etc.

And it annoys me even more when this app is required to allow the phone to do something that it should do properly out the box anyway. Why should we need an app for Facebook or Twitter. Why should you need to download a calender app. (And this one is the personal experience of a friend) Why the hell should you need to download an app called Camera+ before your iPhone even takes half decent photos.

As a tech geek myself, I had around 100 apps loaded on N8 at one stage. I eventually realised how few I actually used so I reformatted the phone, started over and now I have about 10 that I've reloaded. I thought I'd add the others back if I missed them. I have not.

You are right that the developers are leaving Symbian but most of the good stuff already exists anyway. No doubt some new start ups will come along in the next two years but if I miss out on that one app then so be it.

Trust me Hardware matters, but not as high as the other 2 for me as most of the functions in todays smartphone come in the form of apps.

I mean the reason I selected a Xperia S over the HTC One X or the iPhone 4s is simply because of hardware.

  • 12 Mp camera with dedicated shutter
  • 440 ppi Screen res
  • HDMI connectors
  • USB connectivity
  • GPS+GLONASS

But I used software is my 1st selection criteria, hardware was second.

I really do find these discussions interesting as it just goes to show how there is definitely not a one size fits all solution in the cellphone world. I suppose the fact I favour the hardware foremost is the reason I cannot find at phone that'd make me move to android yet. Also what you favour when it comes to hardware affects the decision. The difference between a great and an exceptional screen would not sway me, for instance. A really crap one would sway me away though. I have also admitted before that the camera is my priority so that would be the major draw card. I suppose that alone explains my continued loyalty to Symbian. Everything else would really need to suck, which it doesn't, to make me move.
 
As long as you've really spend adequate time with either Android or iOS to make an informed decision, then take Symbian, and blessings.
 
Rooting and loading roms on Android is so easy these days that it's become a non-issue. The AOKP rom tranformed my SGT10.1 from a hardly used piece of crap into a beauty. Yes, the rom is still a bit wild, but I just cannot see a jailbroken iOS device beat it.

Yeah.. it depends WHICH Android you're talking about. Rooting my SGS - pretty easy. Rooting my Kindle Fire - not so easy. Rooting the Sensation - bit of a nightmare.

For the droid stuff, Elementals wrote a how to for virtualbox (in the Android section).
Just doing a quick search shows IOS can also be run on virtualbox.

This way you can virtually play with both.
 
Which brand of Android tablet would serial rom'ers here recommend for best results/stability/etc ?

Yip, but I'm sorry but a virtual experience is not going to give you a true feel of the phone. A phone is about holding it, feeling it, seeing how IT handles the software not my quad core laptop processor. The way I find out about other phones is by reading other people's experiences. Unfortunately you do need to sift through the fanboy stuff :)

Agree with ClintX . And running iOS on Android via Virtualbox, well the performance will suck I'm sure.

You'll find that I'll often back up what is being said with proof. Camera was discussed, I posted comparison images. Most ignored photos and went off on another tangent... unsurprisingly :)

Bud in this day and age there is really no excuse for not having mucked about with iPhone or Android. Go to your local mall - I assume you live in a populated urban area? Watch Youtube videos. Read articles. Talk to a colleague. Can you really say with a straight face that there is no way for you to spend adequate time with anything other than a Symbian phone?

Currently the best camera on a phone is the Nokia Pureview which isn't available here yet. Below that it's the iPhone 4S. Below that it's probably the Sony Xperia S.

But in any case... what are you doing on this thread? It's about hacking iOS vs Android. Nothing to do with cameraphones, nothing to do with Symbian. It's a subject you clearly know nothing about. What contribution can you make?
 
Clintx the harsh reality about Symbian is no one goes back to it. For me that's the defining factor. Some go from iOS to android and stay or go back or vice versa. You'll be hard pressed to find users going back to a Symbian based Nokia from either apple or android.

I agree, to make an informed decision you would want to trial a product before committing to it for 2 years. Having said that I could almost guarantee you if you got a Sony experia tomorrow you would never look at another Nokia again.
