I bought my son a PC a while back to get him started on using the interface and to allow him to download pictures from his DSLR without having to use my PC.

He has now started playing Fortnite with his friends, but is complaining about lag. PC is connected via wireless to fibre network and current ping according to MyBroadBand speedtest is 2 ms. (I realize ping to Fortnite servers will be higher - I think it is around 200ms currently)

I can't quite pinpoint what's causing the lag and what would be the most cost effective manner to improve his experience (including whether I should get him connected to the router using CAT cables)

PC Spec below:

Motherboard:Biostar H61mgv
Ram: 4Gb DDR3 1333 TransGeneric
CPU: Core i3 3240
Cooler: Stock
HDD: Sata 160Gb
GFX: AMD HD7850
Monitor: Samsung 23"

I suspect the graphics card should still be fine for Fortnite?

Would a SDD give good increase or should I look at motherboard + cpu or does it just need more RAM?

Thanks for any advice.

Add another 4GB ram stick in, you can consider upgrading the CPU to an i5,
Other issues you can check are if everything is cooling fine (dust etc) and if your HDD is full, these will impact your gaming experience.

How much vram does the gpu have?

For starters you need 8GB RAM. On the HD 7850 run the game at 1080p Medium settings to get 60fps.

Load msi afterburner monitor cpu, ram, gpu, vram usage onscreen to see how much each component is utilised. Can also enable logging and upload the logfile for us to look at.

Lol just saw him going for a 3570k on carb so he's looking.

And he got a Samsung Evo 512GB SSD from carb, the man is on a mission.
The 3570k is on hold for someone else, but getting a 3470 from same seller and he has some RAM too. The SSD should arrive by the weekend.

Just figured the long weekend is ideal downtime and want him to have some fun.

Lag as in avatars doing some weird **** or Lag as in turn the mouse and everything starts going slow?

Lose the wifi. It's too sensitive to interference from appliances, electric fences, solar flares, bad moods, humidity atmospheric pressure, phases of the moon, foul language and randomness.

Then I agree with what most said. RAM or better GPU.
