How so?
Well they're perfectly in your range that you can afford.I'm the same actually 11 years ago when I bought my first car bank offered me pre-approval up to R150k,I bought a car for R65k and paid it off chop chop, bought several cars after that, all with cash I saved up.So that attitude of yours is perfect in my opinion, but it seems like you haven't actually checked what you can pick up a used diesel x3 for.
I was quite clear about my budget in the opening post. But please do post links to these X3s with less than 100k on the clock for under R300k.
If you want a good deal it pays to look around until you find it.My friend last year bought a 2012 3.0d X3 with 60k on the clock for R280k but he was patient, looked at various sites for a month or 2.Here's a simple example of a 2.0d that fits into your criteria, took all of 5 min to find:

I was also clear that the decision to buy an SUV has changed because my wife will be driving 90% of the time and isn't comfortable driving a bigger car.
Sounds exactly like my wife when I wanted to buy the X3,she was dead against it refused to test drive it or come with me to buy it.I went ahead anyway and bought it without her consent and told her that she can stick with the 320d,and yet nowadays she wont even let me use the X3 as she loves it refuses to drive the 320d as a daily driver!
The X3 is not as big as an X5,let her actually test drive it then decide.Effectively it's just a raised 3 series.
But yes if all else fails you can't go wrong with a 320d,it's the modern equivalent of what a corolla was back in the day with better looks, handling, power etc and never ever discount the run flat advantage in our current crime ridden society where if you have to stop for a flat your life is at risk!
Get conti run flats, they drive like normal tyres not harsh at all.
