Fortuner - which one?

Tell me more - is this motorplan extension thing specific to the audi or in general? I've never owned a motorplan. Will do some googling.
Should I be concerned with a turbo diesel model...
On motorplan you only pay for tyres, everything else covered. Comes with all premium brands as standard, but audi recently dropped price of extending it and allows you to extend it to 10 years 300k. Can only extend if it is still under motorplan.

Just curious - looking at a Fortuner. Don't want any 4l V6 craziness... I'm happy with used low mileage (below 100k)... my budget says R250k - is that too optimistic? I see them online, but should I be worried about a 2.5 D-4D (or 2.4) at that price? Which is the best local variant in the 2013-2019 age bracket?
What should I expect price wise for anything with under 100k? What should I expect km wise for anything under R250k?
Are they as reliable as people say they are?
I don't plan on being near any hijack hotspots - don't live near Gauteng, Cape Town or Durbs...

You can search for this: I can only tell you what I observed.
Look to see if your choice is free from that rear rocking motion problem, one person and loaded. I am not sure how it feels being the driver but I know how it looks when it went past me.
I only witnessed this twice on two different fortuners passing me 1st just after a corner speed around 110Km/h and few years later(2018) newer model rear lights it looked full of passengers.
In the 1st case I saw the rear bodywork shifts on the rear suspension, now I never saw this on any other vehicle passing me, in this case it was easily noticeable if you observent in such ways but not as bad as the recent case.
The 2nd time it passed me before a corner after a straight at about 130-140Km/h I was travelling 120Km/h.
In this case It was filled with passengers and I was shocked at what I saw, I was on the verge to follow them and warn the driver to be carefull but decided to let it go after some traffic. In this case I can even see the driver somewhat correcting with his steering wheel and that was not expected, the wheels were not deflated from what I could see. As i said, I never observed this on other vehicles.

Also there is a gearbox software update available from the dealers sa well. Should smoothen things out if there are issues.
Mine had its first service and the first thing I told the service advisor was to check the gearbox. He laughed and said it's probably software but they'll have a look.

OK guys, sorry for being all over the place, but what do you think of this?
I can't stand the quest, but the Prestige interests me somewhat. I've just never owned a diesel. What would servicing on the 1.4 D-4D cost roughly?

I know, I know, I've come a long way from the Fortuner, but since my wife will use it the most, I just have to compromise on that piece.
My first Hilux oil change service was R1732

I am trying to imagine what you talking about and I can't.

I've spoken to Toyota people and they said it's crazy how Toyota can do bigger diesel engines so good for bakkies, but not smaller engines for cars. I've looked at the same variant a few times, but in my view the petrol models are a safer choice.

As a sidenote, I own a 2016 Toyota Corolla Quest, it's a very reliable car, with loads of space. Almost no toys, but then, there's nothing to break. A bulletproof car.

If the Corolla is an option you would settle for, I would tend towards the Petrol variants rather than the diesels...

They are generally bulletproof cars, but don't come with ridiculous spec levels, so you do have to compromise in some areas.

5 Pages later and no mention of a 2.0d/3.0d X3 or X5 3.0d.

Bullet proof engines with lots of reliability and low fuel consumption. My X3 3.0d uses less fuel than my stupid tazz ever did back in the day!I've just passed 300 000km's this month on holiday to Durban.

Don't bother with BMW newer gen petrol models, they're not really reliable at higher mileages and consumption and torque are not as good as the diesels.

The old BMW straight six motors were reliable but yeah those days are mostly gone.Diesel is the BMW to buy these days.

If you're not particularly looking for an SUV then even an F30 320d will be much much better than a Corolla in drive, handling, safety, comfort and features etc.

The only time I would suggest a Fortuner over the BM's would be if he intends going proper bundu bashing and needs decent 4x4 capabilities(in that case a Prado would be even better) but since seeing he's also eyeing sedans then the X3/X5 will be more than capable of climbing the odd pavement or tackling a dirt road or 2.

On the tar road there is no comparison, the X3/X5 always trumps the Fortuner in every way.I did this comparison a year or two back and the inefficient sluggish Toyota engines really put me of their SUV's(Prado,Fortuner).

i feel you! Toyota and BMW is always TOP of my choices in everything with wheels.... ive seen way to many things go wrong on other vehicles

I test drove a discovery 4 3.0d and man I fell in love with that thing!

It combines efficient engine and lots of nice standard features like harmon kardon, keyless entry, electric seats,Bluetooth and comfortable 7 seating to name a few...overall feels very BMW like in build quality and other aspects but then it can also go proper off roading like the Prado. The air suspension beats them all and makes you feel like singing "I can show you the world" while minimising excessive body roll in the corners.

...and then I did my research, they are an unreliable money pit unfortunately not anywhere close to Toyota or BMW diesel reliability.

BM X3s are out of my price range unfortunately. I never buy what I can "afford", I buy what I want to spend lol. Anyway, we may end up settling on something completely different since my wife will be the primary driver.
Thanks everyone for your input!

Sounds like you wrote them off before even checking them out.Weird.

Buy on facts, not on preconceived notions bud, that's the best advice I can give you,if I listened to my brothers advice aka a person who never owned a BMW in his life yet swore they were expensive to maintain I would have never seen the light.

Yeah. Duster isn't a bad option though I like the pull of the turbo diesel but I'm a little nervous of Renault turbos...
The motors in the duster are good.

But for your requirements and if the missus will be the majority driver then really look at a 320d. You will not regret it. I love my little tractor rocket...
