The network was empty.

I am still on 0.2mbps download and 711 ping.

OK I can confirm that as of exactly 07h00 the network went completely down to the speeds we have seen the past week.

I have a feeling that we are being throttled. Or they have done something to limit throughput.

Why at 04h30 this morning was the network flying? I was getting 38ms pngs. Now I'm getting 900ms pings. YouTube was streaming like I've never seen it before - realtime, fast!

We are being screwed. My phone line is also still down. Telkom sent an SMS last night saying that the line has been tested and no faults have been found.

I give up...

My feeling is there is a pool of bandwidth available. When the network fills up, our speeds are ****e. At 4:30am, almost noone is online, so you get the speed you should have.

Lets hope today is the day this shizzle gets fixed.

OK that makes sense..

I just called them again. Apparently your reference number - no longer exists. They cant find it. But every person I have been talking to on that helpdesk has a different story.

I now have an escalation number: f1433022

The guy I just spoke to says that the fault in Fourways is still open and it's listed as a "conjested exchange".

Just got a call (after I escalated last night) - " It's not you, its the DSLAM, its everyone in the area, it has been handed back to Network Technicians as it is a congested exchange "

We are royally screwed methinks.

Just got off the line with AfriHost. Apparently I can do a DSL line port to AfriHost. They will find the best excahnge and connect me to another port. This sounds good to me.

I notice that we have been upgraded to a 6MB line from 4MB. Just spoke to another reliable source who informs me that Telkom could be using us as a trial test on the 6MB change over, which apparently on a 4MB account can be very unstable. I dont think we are getting the full scoop from Telkom here...

Anyway..I'm giving it another few days then porting over to Afrihost. Can it really be any worse? I doubt it. At least they are willing to listen and try their best to assist.

Phoned Telkom now and tried to escalate, they said they are aware of issue in Fourways and will not escalate my call. I asked how long to resolve and he said he does not know.

Afrihost cannot overcome the primary cause of your problem, which is problems on the DSLAM. Afrihost/axxess is an ISP and do not have their own DSLAMs so they will "try" to get you a port on exactly the same DSLAM you are currently on.

PS. And they are a great ISP!!

A comment:

Some of you are having issues similar to mine. What I did notice is that one day my router no longer worked, and I eventually got it to synch again by playing with all the modem settings and putting it into "Multimode" whatever that is... previously it worked fine when set to ADSL2+

It is quite obvious the fools did some kind of upgrade and in true Telkom tradition, cocked it up beyond belief and we suffer

Hey everybody, glad to find ?empathy? here, thought I was the only one :-(

Am also pushing them, nothing else we can do

Last update I got is the IMAX DSLAM I'm connected to is provisioned with 150Mbps of backhaul, but is only utilising 30Mbps.

Logically then the issue is either the DSLAM can't accept traffic at a rate > 30Mbps (unlikely), or something in the upstream path from ESR->MetroE ring->DSLAM is overloaded, misconfigured or broken, resulting in only a constricted 30Mbps rate reaching the DSLAM.

Hope they figure it out soon.

I had a telkom technician here 2 hours ago that is asigned to the Fourways problem, and he actually knows hs stuff - I got exactly the same explanation!...Except (and I dont intend opening a can of worms but I'm gatvol), he recons that the exchange was upgraded (in error?) to 30Mbps instead of 150Mbps in December 2011, and since they have been smacking more and more people onto this exchange, thinking it can handle 150Mbps, it has now folded under the load - from the horses mouth so to speak.

20 minutes later a very freindly and helpful guy from Telkom Cape Town called to say that they are now attending to the problem..

I got an sms last night from Telkom to say the issue was resolved, then got a phone call early this morning to say the same thing, told the oke on the phone that my connection was still erratic, he said he'd recreate the port, must admit it has been a lot more stable today and I seem to be getting decent speeds, although still not 100%
