Free ADSL data on weekends

As a matter of interest, nightrider and weekender can be used together. If you have nightrider and weekender both enabled then in nightrider time on weekend the discount is multiplied together. So nightrider gives you 5 times and weekender gives you 10 , then during nightrider time on weekender you get 50x your cap

Hey Laurie. Since seeing you are replying in this forum, could you please elaborate on the restrictive Terms & Conditions that Cybersmart has? Your loyal customers always seem to defend you and Cybersmart and your T&C in a rather irritating and anal manner. You have failed to comment on this thread - Cybersmart's Restrictive Terms & Conditions. WTF. And your loyal customers keep going on about how Laurie is THE CEO on these forums, who always replies and interacts with the public on these forums.

So tell us, what's up with the T&C? I would like to get your personal viewpoint. Do you think we will get new Terms & Conditions along with all these new packages / addons?

As a matter of interest, I'm a CS customer and I've been alternating with my Afrihost account for months. When I get capped on the last coupla days of the month, just change to Afrihost. Never had any calls or emails from Cybersmart complaining about it. But I do realise they'll tell my to take a flying leap if I call the helpdesk with problems related to my account hopping. Can we move on now, please...

(Incidentally, this has allowed me to compare bandwidth speeds - Afrihost is noticeably slower. Especially with video streaming and Xbox Live, on 4Mb line)

Oh, thanks for the info re the nightrider + weekender Laurie. Will be emailing you guys shortly.

Personally think it's a good deal especially if you combine your nightrider/weekender deal and are using only 1/50th of your cap.

That is astonishing, well done.

It more than a good deal, it's groundbreaking.

We just need telkom to lower the price of 4 meg line rental and a service like this could be really useful.

30 hour weekend? :wtf:

Saturday = 24 hours. Sunday = 24 hours. Monday till 5:59 = ~6 hours.

That makes 54 hours... :D

Thanks Pilgrim .. it appears my brain only switches on later in the day .. thanks for pointing out my stupid mistake ...

they should add more services! yeah! like:

- get 0.5mb for every 10 mb free, and if you download 100mb in 1 hour, you get an additional 5mb.
- on sundays, you can get discounted rates at 3 o'clock in the morning, but if you use it, you will be shaped, throttled and limited on wednesdays every 2nd week (unless you pay R15 for the "Nolimit" offer)
- limit your browsing to only html traffic during weekends, to enable bursting on tuesdays at lunch time!
- how about a feature that...

wait...

screw all this mumbo jumbo all ISP's are "offering" us, and give us:
- 1 single bill
- uncapped
- pay per speed
- be reasonable with the cost.

that is ALL we need!

Thank you.

I agree. Please just quickly tell Telkom to give us LLU, cheap IPConnect, lower International bandwidth costs, lower local bandwidth costs, lower ADSL line costs etc.
THAT is all we actually need. Until then, ISP's gotta try to work around the problem (Telkom), by innovating and being creative.

Ja, good luck with that. Any other reasonable ISP would have said, "oh ja... those terms and conditions are causing us to lose customers, so we'll just chuck them or fix them.... If there is a problem with a customer we will just tell him over the phone that we cannot give technical support for problems related to other providers."

But the fact that Laurie ignores this and keeps those terms and conditions in there is what scares me. It is all fine and good to say, "well they never enforce them"... it's the day that they decide to start enforcing them that is the problem.

Sorry, I will not support anybody with such Draconian terms... in fact I will actively discourage anyone from using them.

Bandwidth in South Africa is expensive enough without having to deal with this kind of crap from ISPs.

LLU will happen sometime in the future, what we need is someone who can properly make use of the seacom undersea cable. The fat pipe is already here, installed, ready, and waiting to be utilized.

no ways. Surely you realise by now that that's not the only issue here.
We still need to get connected from the Seacom termination point to the isp's. Hence, IPConnect, local bandwidth costs, backhaul etc.
This problem has been discussed ad infinitum in these forums.
PLUS
when you do get Seacom bandwidth to your ISP, it's not as fast (see my comment earlier re Afrihost being slower than Cybersmart on a 4Mb connection)

This is a first for ADSL cap limitations, but it's not a wildly new innovation in that Telkom had a dial-up "weekender" (callmore) package many years back and might still do (I don't use their voice products so don't know).
Congrats to Cybersmart for taking the initiative yet again though with more bandwidth available to their users!

Laurie said:
If you take our entry level 384 Kbps offering which costs R169 (for comparison purposes with other ISP's this is R152 for the ADSL circuit + R17 for the 1 Gig cap) and add Weekender to it at R99, your all in cost would be R268.

....and then if you want to use any other bandwidth during the week you can buy the top up at R189.00 for 3Gigs!!!!

This means that you get 4Gigs to use during the week and uncapped on weekends for the incredible price R457.

I pay R399 for my Screamer "UNCAPPED ALL THE TIME" connection so why would I even think of looking at this?!?!?

why can cyber smart allow uncapped on the weekends only. Why cant they make uncapped after hours, and business hours you get ur gigs that you paid for. i would be happy with that forever. I would probaly pay under R500 for that, regardless of what speed ur line is

I still dont understand the logic some people have. If the amount of people willing to pay under R500 for a proper local uncapped account it would be more than what ever it is they are making now.
You have say 1000 who can afford R300 for 30 gigs or want to pay that . But if it was uncapped the amount of people would be 10000. The way i see it is they think by having it so expensive and charging more is going to make more money, but infact it does'nt, cause they dont have my money.

If you tell the DVD store owner he can either have His R25 for the late return on the DVD you hired the day before or you dont buy the 2 or 3 movies every week there ever again. What do you think he will choose? True story, he said i must pay the R25 because he is trying to run a business....lol. I paid and he never saw another cent again, stupid?.. i dont know you tell me?

@wHiTe*LiGhTnInG: While I knida get your point, your logic is flawed. Comparing the bandwidth scenaria to late penalty fees for DVD rentals is just crazy. They're completely different. Also, you've failed to mention anything of the ISPs costs, which doesn't remain flat the more GB they sell. Bandwidth provisioning is a much more complex topic than you make it out to be. There are so many variables and factors involved, some would call it a little science of its own...

White Lightning - Let's put it this way - they just tried uncapped with a handful of people, limited to 384k only and it was unsustainable. And you wanna talk about 10 000 people?!

Not with internet connectivity costs in SA being what they are.

You gotta realise, the isp's are buying bandwidth (a pipe) but selling capacity (quantity of data). It's a very difficult juggling act.
Once we get rid of all the Telkom crap, maybe we can just buy bandwidth ourselves and not have to wory about caps.

Because there are a lot of threads about how that particular product is not even working... LOL

let me tell you a story.

diepkwatergatsloot is a little old village to the south of umangweni. one shop charged R40 for a bread. people bought bread every now and again though, but the shop didn't sell as much.
then one day the shop decided to make a "bread subscription service", and make the bread in bulk instead. they charged R200 per month and the subscriber was allowed to pick up bread any day of the week.

you know what happened the first month? people went in every morning to pick up their bread - they were taking so much bread, that they couldn't keep up with it... they took bread even if there was still 4 and a half loaves at home!

after a month people got tired of hoarding breads every morning, as it was a chore to keep doing it over and over - they only took as they needed.

this is the same as with the uncapped services. in the beginning all the DOWNLOADERS will jump at the service, and almost kill it - but after a while EVEN THEY will calm down, as they get used to it.
this is simply what happens when you take an expensive commodity and make it freely available. it calms down when people get used to it though.

Yes, for the first 2 weeks after the launch, but Screamer's connections are now extremely stable. The only problem is that they are not taking any more subscriptions at the moment.

Because there are a lot of threads about how that particular product is not even working... LOL
