Free ADSL data on weekends

Yes, for the first 2 weeks after the launch, but Screamer's connections are now extremely stable. The only problem is that they are not taking any more subscriptions at the moment.

Why is that a problem? If they were taking in more subscribers then you would probably not even have posted, because they would have been unstable. So if you are on that pie, and you think it's a fair pie, enjoy it....

let me tell you a story.

diepkwatergatsloot is a little old village to the south of umangweni. one shop charged R40 for a bread. people bought bread every now and again though, but the shop didn't sell as much.
then one day the shop decided to make a "bread subscription service", and make the bread in bulk instead. they charged R200 per month and the subscriber was allowed to pick up bread any day of the week.

you know what happened the first month? people went in every morning to pick up their bread - they were taking so much bread, that they couldn't keep up with it... they took bread even if there was still 4 and a half loaves at home!

after a month people got tired of hoarding breads every morning, as it was a chore to keep doing it over and over - they only took as they needed.

this is the same as with the uncapped services. in the beginning all the DOWNLOADERS will jump at the service, and almost kill it - but after a while EVEN THEY will calm down, as they get used to it.
this is simply what happens when you take an expensive commodity and make it freely available. it calms down when people get used to it though.

Yeah, the problem is when your ingredients for the bread are expensive, you may not be able to wait it out. You'll be outta business by the time the downlaoders calm down. Even if it only takes a coupla months. Maybe Mweb could handle the transition period, given their size. I doubt many other ISP's could, at this point.
Seriously, do u think the Webafrica's and Cybersmart's are stupid? Affordable, quality product offerings is their market niche. They don't wanna lose that. But if you read the threads and see the amounts these guys have to pay, you'll realise uncapped just isn't viable yet.
For now, I'd settle for a reasonable sized cap to tide us over for the next 6-12 months. Worst case scenario, till LLU in 2011 (one can but hope)

Technically, its not free, you haveto pay an extra R99 per month

+1. thats the definition of free in this country. these marketing gimmicks will have to come to an end sooner or later. if cybersmart wants to give me free internet over the weekend, why are they charging me R99?

As for marketing gimmicks:
Buy one get one free
Free on weekender plus
Free phone wtih every contract
Free to subscribers
Free with every purchase
Free minutes

Besides, no where in the article does cybersmart say its "free". Read the article again and you'll see that it's article calling it "free dsl" - if you're ganna flame someone for marketing gimmicks, that would be the "staff writer" getting you to read this article.

Yeah staff writer needs to go for some training courses. First course - read the article discussion thread after each article, and make notes. Look for recurring themes/complaints by users... react to these complaints... etc. etc..

Was also interested in the basic accounts getting data usage upped :-/

Anyway.. this package looks but i think pricing is steep for a non-gimba [unless you ensure you use about, uhm.. 2GB(remember the pricing of 3GB if you are on 1GB, else 1.5GB thats with a pricing of +/-R60/GB) on the 4 week-ends totalled] ;) Anyway..

All other ISP's should follow suit now...........its not like they make much on local anyway....

?!

When will Cybersmart actually launch this? According to the news article "The ISP plans to launch a new service in the first week of February", but nothing on either the website or the development website has appeared yet.

Is this just another unfulfilled promise from Cybersmart, like the one where the prices were going to drop (refer to the development site)? I even spoke to a techie before I signed up, who told me that the prices ARE going to go down that following month (August 2009).

Actually, I just emailed them to ask exactly that. It is available, but you have to mail them (info@cybersmart) to request it.

Thanks for the heads up, will mail them tomorrow.

Do not provoke the wrath of the "staff writer", and do not criticize his "news"!
:D:p

I've had the package for 2 weeks now. It's awesome. I heard it should launch this week officially, but don't quote me on that.
