Free DStv Explora with 10Mbps+ Telkom DSL

Good idea, they can only market this to maybe 20% of the ADSL users out there.

It would be very interesting to see what sort of 10mb coverage they currently have, 20% is probably a generous number.

Probably ;-) but will see, my area is still 4meg and will remain there as apparently there is no demand for anything higher? The logic is flawed but hey at least it only took me four years to get a line.

What percentage of SA folk even have 10Mbps availability? My exchange only supports up to 4Mbps, and being in a very small dorp it is unlikely to improve anytime soon.
The offer would interest me if I could get the 10Mbps connection. But I can't

Well this tells me that 12% of the exchanges or whatever are 10mb enabled, whoop de doo.

National
Total Exchanges 1980
Telkom ADSL Enabled 1049 (53%)
Telkom 10Mbps Enabled 235 (12%)
Telkom 20Mbps Enabled 1 (0%)

These features become available when connecting the Explora to the Internet using a normal Ethernet cable, or by plugging in a DStv Wi-Fi Connector (recommended retail price: R399) that lets you connect the decoder to your home Wi-Fi network.

Explora's ethernet port works

Those stats are about 3 years old...

+1 not to mention Telkom's own checker being out of date.

My line as a example...

Nope, not worth it even if you have availability.

Requires a 24 month contract at X price, that alone is a dealbreaker when it comes to DSL

Telkom and MultiChoice have entered into an exclusive six-month promotion which will see Telkom broadband contracts being bundled with DStv Explora decoders, the companies have confirmed in statements.
I suspect the use of the word "Free" in the thread title is misleading and you'd need to sign up for a 24mth DSTV premium subscription to qualify as a minimum requirement.

All that says is your exchange is is max 10mb,,,, are you 'actually' on and getting 20?

DSTV marketing robots phoned me the other day to upgrade my pvr. They said you qualify for an upgrade Sir!
Wonderful, new explorer and all that.

Turns out the 'upgrade' as they call it means you must pay for the thing over the next 2 years or something added onto your subscription.

I just put the phone down.

So it's dropped then? Cause of cable theft and Telkom not replacing it?
Serious reply: Cable theft would not impact on those statistics - UNLESS Telkom also removed the DSLAM/IMAX/MSAN/ISAM from those exchanges, which they don't do as normally cable theft only impacts a certain portion of an exchange area. Those stats are based on exchange info, not subscriber info.

Sorry Mickey, you are correct I was pointing out actual user base.
