Free Google Chrome OS here in 2010

Hopefully it will support older hardware... just think, that old PC can actually have some use...
 
I tried one of those alpha (or beta?) versions few months ago. Its basically just a scaled down linux. Can't see how that will rival windows.

Which makes one think....why not just install Ubuntu & you have it all?

So your mind is made up about Chrome based on a alpha/beta you tested a few months ago?

Well according to this: "Companies developing hardware for the operating system include Hewlett-Packard, Acer, Adobe, Asus, Lenovo, Texas Instruments, Freescale, Intel, Samsung Australia and Qualcomm."

We have yet to see if this new OS will make any impact so let's reserve judgement until it's actually released.
 
I for one will not be downloading this. I like my stuff on my pc. This may be cool for netbooks and stuff where people have 100mbps connection but 384...I think not!
 
Will be interesting to see if they can impact the OS market share in the same way they have with Chrome as a browser.
 
guessing chrome os will be pretty sweet for thinclients and the like

Back on topic, I this this will work. It will obviously be no threat to MS though. Will be nice to use on a netbook or something like that
 
Ja, I will also give it a try... but it will have to really be something earth shattering to offer me something better than Ubuntu and Puppy Linux offer me right now.
 
This booting from a flash drive will be pretty cool (altho thats what puppy is for). Looking forward to the day when linux OSes run straight off flash in the mobo (with drivers for major OSes!)
 
Right so Google uses http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goobuntu internally, basically customized Ubuntu.. now they release Chrome OS :erm:

Yeah.. another half-baked product from Google released to the market in hopes that everyone will "create" it and do all the work. Google has a habit of just releasing something and waiting for everyone including the open source community to do all the work for free. Its the reason Android is not where it should be. Its seriously bugs me because there is bounds of potential but its like they don't care.

@Nuro: They should have focused on Android more, you right.
 
I get so angry when large news agencies like AFP get it wrong this badly. Trying to hide behind the "seen as" phrase in "... seen as the rival to Microsoft's Windows..." without saying who sees it that way. I find it difficult to believe that anyone even remotely connected to the tech industry sees it that way.

Exactly. Google themselves have said that they're not building a desktop OS, they're building a web OS. It's basically going to be Linux that can launch Chrome. From what I understand the browser will be the only app that runs locally, everything else will be in this "cloud" executives and managers have started raving about recently /s.

Don't get what you mean with "drivers for major OSes"? Asus already has mobos with Linux built-in. You can drop into a browser via an instant-boot Linux, or boot from your hard-drive. Also: Will there be that big a difference between booting Linux off the mobo and booting off a SATA SSD drive? Ubuntu boots in seconds off mine.
